Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers' Favorite The Pyres of Destiny is the second novel in the Call of Destiny Series by D.M. Earley. Jake and Samuel get visions of oncoming danger. Rattled and a little scared out of their current peaceful existence, Jake shares his vision with Dakota and that creates chaos they never anticipated. Even though they passed the trials, the past still comes knocking on their door. A group of people known as The Six wants Jake to pay the price for his mistakes. They want him to suffer, and The Six know the heaviest punishment for Jake would be to offer Dakota as a sacrifice. With the harrowing visions of a doomed future constantly torturing him, Jake knows he will have to make some tough decisions if he wants to keep Dakota safe and sound. Author D.M. Earley’s word selection makes The Pyres of Destiny hyperrealistic. I fell in love with the narrative style and how each description was painstakingly vivid. The transition between Jake’s visions and reality, the conflict of The Six, and Jake’s dilemma are all handled with perfection. The pace of the story is fast without being overwhelming. The narrative style is intriguing as well as simple; a nice combination that keeps the attention of readers on the story. The suspense was alive in the story, in fact, it was almost the protagonist. Rowtag plays a very important role in the story (and he is, perhaps, the main source of suspense), and his riddles confused me. The author adds just the right number of twists and turns to make sure readers can never guess what will happen next in the story. D.M. Earley did a lot of research about the Native American culture and spirituality, and you can tell that by the depth with which he handles those themes. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel.

  • Very entertaining

Reviewed by Vincent Dublado for Readers' Favorite The Pyres of Destiny by D.M. Earley is a moving and interesting tale that continues the story of Jake Michaels and Dakota. In this second book, it is comforting to see Jake doing his best to give Dakota the kind of life that she deserves. They have survived their trials, and just when everything seems peaceful, something that lies at the core of the past begins to disrupt the normal run of things. A group known as The Six is trying to reclaim a destiny that rightfully belongs to them. To do this, they must make Jake pay for his transgressions, for the way he answered to the One, and to offer Dakota as a sacrifice. Visions will continue to plague Jake, and he will have to take up arms once again in order to save Dakota and the child she will carry. As the second installment in the Call of Destiny Series, The Pyres of Destiny continues to deliver the goods you expect the way its predecessor has delivered. D.M. Earley continues to make Jake and Dakota develop as characters as well as meticulously represent Native American culture. It is a storyline with a strong connection to the first book in the series. If you started reading The Pyres of Destiny, you will be enticed to read The Temptation of Destiny (Book 1). The real inward journey depicted in this second installment is how Jake is struggling to break free from the horrors of his past and trying to live a normal and peaceful life—something that his past would not allow. In the course of facing the demons that plague the life he is trying to build with Dakota, the story becomes even more focused on its theme. The Pyres of Destiny is a potent supernatural drama that stays committed in its depth.

  • Very suspenseful

Reviewed by Stephanie Chapman for Readers' Favorite D.M. Earley composed a Native American spiritual fantasy in The Pyres of Destiny. The story opens with Samuel and Jake having visions of impending death. Samuel notifies Jim about two visitors in his vision. Jake warns Dakota of his vision. They thwart the assassins but are unsure what “South America” and Vincent Dibella’s intentions are. When confronted, Dibella denies the accusation. Meanwhile, several women have gone missing. When Mina and Kimi disappeared, countless law enforcement agencies began a massive search and rescue mission to find them. A human trafficking ring has taken the girls into the Badlands. Jill tries to convince the women to accept their destiny. What is the destiny she offers them? The Pyres of Destiny impressed me by including references to Native American spirituality with visions, medicine men, and names like Storm Walker and Running Horse. D.M. Earley created seamless transitions from each character’s perspective, and the timeline of events is easy to follow. Jake's and Dakota’s frustration equaled mine when Rowtag would never give an answer to their questions and spoke in riddles. This provided suspense throughout the book. I wasn't able to predict what was going to happen next because of the unexpected turn of events. The graphic details of the story brought me into every event as if I was there. The conclusion was almost painful because of the cliffhanger for the sequel. I would recommend anyone who enjoys fantasy stories and reading about Native American culture to pick up The Pyres of Destiny. The content has extreme violence and explicit scenes, which make this book appropriate for adult readers.
