    Not a Bad Start

This book is touted as Game of Thrones meets Gladiator and I have to say there was some of the former but a whole, whole lot of the latter. If you like scenes filled with fight after fight after fight - add in a few skirmishes and a couple of full scale battles - even a siege - well this is the book for you! The main character that we follow for the majority of the book is Tau, a young fellow who after a violent tragedy changes his life, goes on a path of vengeance that includes him becoming the greatest swordsman of his time. And we see just about all the matches/battles/skirmishes that take him there. Yes, there's magic. There are dragons. There is some terrific world-building - a fantasy world that is more African than anything else. There's a bit of romance. There are some intricate politics that I would have liked to have seen from another POV. But my favourite parts of the book were where Tau and his sword-brothers begin their relationships and then grow them. Found family stuff, really. And that's a catnip of mine. So, this highly touted book was good, but not great for me. Far too much fighting and not enough of the characters out of the ring. I'm hopeful, though, that the next book will have more of politics, the magic and the dragons! Oh, and that cover! GORGEOUS!

    Good, meaty fantasy.

As another reviewer stated, there's a lot of fighting in this book. But the author writes battles incredibly well! I usually skim fight scenes in novels but I was riveted by them and could imagine every movement. I want to know more about this world, and I want to know more about Tau and how he's going to process everything that happens to him in this novel.

    So. Much. Fighting.

Definitely cool worldbuilding. The characters felt really real. The author is good at his craft! But battle after fight after practice-fight after murder after combat-competition after demon-battle....I just gave up. If fighting is your thing, you'll probably love this.

    Rage of Dragons

The story was very good, and highly imaginative if a little disjointed in places- the idea of seeing an invasion from the standpoint of the invaders, who apparently had no choice, being driven out of their former home- at least, that is what was vaguely alluded to. This is a novel and much appreciated approach, to show that invaders are not always just evil, but have their own problems. The "glossary" at the end was almost a necessity, and perhaps could have been at the beginning. The fact that it ends up abruptly, almost in the middle of the action, is unsatisfactory. As a "come on" for a continuation of the story in "the next book," I find this to be clumsy and unsatisfactory. Even when a book is intended as part of a series, each book should be complete in itself. In my opinion, this book is not, and this is a shortcoming.
