  • The red coat.

This is a very unusual history of what it meant to be Irish in Boston, and the rise of immigrant settlers into the middle class through hard work, faith and love. The red coat is an emblem of all that the family aspired to. This story does not flinch from the difficult bits either ..the two little boys orphaned by a drunken father and a dead mother. A lot to think about.

  • Very Good

The story was interesting in its intergenerational aspect. And the coat being passed down from one family to another. The relationships were real and sometimes hard but the families supported one another. The writing was well laid out and easy to follow.

  • Enjoyable, evocative and unforgettable!

One of the most delightful, touching and enjoyable books I have read in a long time. The recipes, details and poignancy made me want the book to go on and on. Lovely and inspiring.

  • Fragmented and long.

This book is not well written. It introduces characters and events that do not do anything for the story. This leads to the reader losing interest Had the author been focused the book might have been more enjoyable. She was not, so it was dull and long. The pages and pages of historical excerpts do not in any way advance the story.
