    Excellent

Well writte and a very original idea. Some romance but does not take over the book. Keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last minute and makes your heart pulse with the drums!

    Very original book

I thought the plot was very interesting, even though the beginning was kind of slow for me, but after about 150 pages, I was really absorbed into the story and I finished the book in no time. I had never read any books about horses and the fantastical elements the author added to it with the capaill uisce, the blood thirsty horses that are used in the scorpio races, really added to its originality and I absolutely loved this concept. Another aspect of the story I really liked is that even thought there is a love story in the book, it is not the main theme the author exploits, which makes it a change from the other young adult books I’ve read recently. The two main characters in this story are Sean Kendrick and Kate « Puck » Conolly. They are both singning up in the races for personal reasons in order to win the money that comes with the first position. I have grown very attached to both characters and I love them to pieces. I absolutely loved both characters relationships with their horses, and I even found it beautiful. The story is told at the first person singular and the point of view alternates between Puck and Sean. I really liked having the chance to see into both character’s head, but sometimes it was taking me a while before I realized the point of view had changed. That’s the main downside I have to give the book. I really enjoyed this book and I am giving it a four stars. I recommend this book to every horse lover in this world and anyone that loves fantasy. :)

After reading the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, I wasn't sure if I wanted to pick up another book by Maggie Stiefvater. I mean, Shiver was a pretty neat concept, and an interesting start to the series, but it just seemed to be falling apart by the end. Frankly, I felt a little let down by the finale. But I kept picking this book up and reading the back. "It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die." How can that not be a hook?! Even though the water horses are based loosely on many myths about the same, I love the way this story is told. I love the brutal starkness, the savageness. And yet, it's beautiful, without being sappy and pandering. The book wraps up with what seems like a Neil Gamain-esque ending to me - what you dream of the characters is what will happen.
