This is easily my favourite book in a long time. The prose is well-written, the story-line interesting, and the setting both a creative spin on a typical dystopian and a good use of an unusual choice of landscape. It creates an usually comfortable setting for a world after a horrifying apocalypse, taking a basic idea and spinning it into something new and fascinating. The author's background in and love for science, especially physics, comes through beautifully to make the sci-fi aspects feel real. The characters are diverse and enjoyable, all of them well-developed. It is rare to find a cast as ethnically diverse as this one. The romances are also well-done, and the characters interesting enough that you are invested in their relationship. It is also a LGBT+ romance written by a member of the LGBT+ community, which makes it worth at least a look. But perhaps the highest praise I could give it is that as soon as I finished it the first time, I immediately reread it. No regrets.

  • Intense, original, and well written

This book manages to do the unexpected in almost every situation that the characters face, and that is partially why The Scorpion Rules and its sequel, The Swan Riders, make my list of favourite YA novels. The way it intentionally avoids clichés is very refreshing. I have seen some reveiws elsewhere saying that they found the plot kind of slow, but I thought it was a good pace that didn't run away with itself. Tension builds throughout the story, ending with a very thrilling climax that made me go out to buy the sequel as soon as possible. The characters are funny and realistic, and their relationships are as complex as the relationships of real people. The descriptions in the book conjure great imagery. I reccommend this series of two novels to anyone looking for a thoughtful and original sci-fi story.
