    The Song of Achilles

This book is a masterpiece. Miller draws us into the story, the relationships and their outcomes, exactly as the title says, like a song. The pacing reminds me of Duras' "Moderato Cantabile". So many writers have been fascinated by the fall of Troy from the Trojan perspective, but this looks at the long, drawn out destruction from the Greek side. The way Miler paints the love between Achilles and Patrocles binds us into their emotions. The skilful weaving of the human and the divine, richly enhances the narrative, as does the insight into the very human psychology of both gods and people.

    Book hangover!

I LOVED this book! I appreciate Madeline Miller's writing style so much. She draws you into the story with rich descriptions and stunning detail that helps drive the story instead of bogging it down. While I don't know the ancient Greek myths, histories and legends in detail, I do really enjoy them. I could imagine Achilles' life and how things unfolded the way Ms. Miller penned them. I couldn't put the book down while reading and couldn't start another book right away after as I was still savouring the story in my mind and wishing it continued. Even a few weeks later, the story is vivid in my mind- it was not a forgettable read. One of the best book hangovers I've had in a while! I will definitely be reading everything Madeline Miller writes!

    This and this and this

I loved this book so openly and publicly that three of my friends immediately started reading it and texted me their experience. It's so wonderfully done and hurt-y and lovely and perfect.

    An emotional tour de force

An immensely powerful retelling of an ancient and timeless classic. What Madeline Miller evokes in her debut novel is more than mere sentiments of despair and laughter. Through the characters of Achilles and Patroclus, Achilles's more than platonic soulmate, a gutwrenching coming-of-age novel is yielded with all the right elements of anxiety, hubris and love. Be it simply a mother's love, a love shared between lovers, or a love lost. To read this book is to know and understand a different take on Homer's Illiad.
