Reading this is like pealing back layers of an onion, if the onion was printed with myths and fairytales and is also a place of made cozy fireplaces and grand adventures.

  • Fascinating and beautiful

This is definitely my favorite book of 2021 (so far)! Like The Night Circus (also by Morgenstern), The Starless Sea is slow-paced and beautifully atmospheric, and the setting is as much a character as the actual characters. It doesn't just follow one or even multiple characters, but jumps around between different times and points of view and stories-within-the-story. I loved the meta and how it's a book about books and storytelling and readers. The romance was very much a subplot, which I don't mind at all, but it did feel a bit underdeveloped (my only complaint with the whole book). Despite the slow pacing, I read this book pretty fast until about the last hundred pages, when I stopped for a while because I didn't want it to end!

  • Great fantasy book, but a little overwhelming

Loved Morgenstern's first book, "The Night Circus". Had high expectations about this book. It's a great fantasy book but with too many different minor story threads that you have to follow in order to get the big picture. We had this book for book club, and everyone was overwhelmed and couldn't get the full story because of the numerous minor story plots. Definitely not for the faint of heart! Otherwise, this book is great!

  • Lyrical, Beautiful, inspiring

This book was lovely but it was so slow. I'm not sure why- the short chapters or the incredible lyrical writing. The story was lovely and magical. I loved the imaginative rituals and harbors in the Starless Sea. It's myth and magic was inspiring.
