Fleeing across a wintery Russian landscape

An exciting adventure romance that takes place in Russia during the war with Napoleon, I found that I was unable to put this book down. There may well have been typos and misused words but I hardly noticed them as my attention was solely on the plot. The reader is kept guessing all the way through as to whether Alex and Octavia will be able to reach safety with their two young charges before icy weather, war and conniving relatives overtake them. Alex seems to take pride in irritating his brothers, but despite the cloud under which he lives, he is a generous, kind-hearted man with an off-beat sense of humour and keen intelligence. Octavia is just as smart and does her best not to be snared by his sweet talk and teasing. The addition of the children with their own story line made the story interesting and humourous. I enjoyed the interaction between the members of the small group of travellers as they took on a wintery Russia, however I would have really liked it if Alex had made a better showing of himself when they finally reached St Petersburg. The story focussed on adventure rather than romance, which wasn't lacking. In line with the continuous presence of the children, the story is clean and can be read by most age groups. The book does come to a happy conclusion and children are safely reunited. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review.

    An entertaining read

An entertaining read. The setting in Russia during the Napoleonic war was engaging and seemingly realistic. I liked the characters and their individual plights to escape the war with their wards. Of course it is interesting when the main characters’ lives cross twice in different circumstances- giving each a chance to reflect on the qualities they saw in the other. The author used realism, suspense, humor and a good dose of knowledge of human nature to keep me reading more. Yes, a satisfying ending completes the story. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
