  • Beautifully Written

I didn't put this book down until I finished it. What I thought was to be a book about crime scene cleanups became a gorgeously written memoir not only about a transgender but a child, a man, a woman and mostly a human spirit. Nobody is perfect, nobody has the perfect family. Sandra goes through like with dignity and flair.

  • Captivating, Gut-Wrenching, and Simply Astounding!

Possibly the best book that I have read in my entire life! A harrowing true story (which I had NO IDEA was the case) of one of Australia's most progressive LGBTQ+ activists, supporters, and community members. I believe it is note-worthy that some of the content described should be flagged as a Trigger Warning (TW) for those who have experienced their own series of "hardships", potentially making this sensitive content difficult to read. That being said- reading of the trials and tribulations of this brave, strong, and brilliant human being makes me even more proud to be a member of the same LGBTQ+ community. Sarah Krasnostein has created a relatable, and easy-to-follow story line that tugs at your heartstrings, and educates you on a topic that has been considered "taboo" for far too long. You belong, you belong, you belong!!!

  • Unexpectedly different

Thought this would be filled with crime scene gore but instead it’s a well written story of an incredible person finding her place in a cruel world.

  • Exceptional

This is essentially two books intertwined. One is about a person who was worse than neglected as a child and never really fit in anywhere, including gender assignment. I think that this saga is the more horrific. The other is about the under appreciated services provided by those who are tasked with cleaning the aftermath of murder, neglect, and more. This is something that few people have to see and smell besides law enforcement and certain types of social workers. The amazing thing is how kind and empathetic Sandra is to the living and the stresses they face despite her own terrible history. I certainly don't mean that her employees are unkind, and I surely couldn't do their jobs. The book is well written, but also very difficult to read because of its content. People need to be aware of the long lasting harm done to some people and also of the incredible people who come in and clean up in unbelievable situations. I requested and received a free review copy via NetGalley. In 2020 I was able to buy a permanent audio copy and feel that the narrator is truly exceptional.
