  • Charming book

This book has some sweet, rather confused characters who find themselves at a crossroads in their life, whether continuing in a marriage or long term relationship, adopting a baby, or jettisoning a high school persona she has outgrown. The setting of the lovely Mediterranean island of Mallorca makes you want to jump on a plane and visit. The family involved has some decisions to make and sometimes constantly being around family makes them no easier to answer. The story takes place over two weeks and makes for a charming travelogue and is definitely a fun summer read.

  • Unhappy in its own way

I enjoyed Straub's "Other People We Married" more than I enjoyed her new novel - perhaps her writing is better suited to short stories, because the Vacationers was a bit of a slog for me. It felt like a literary "beach" read that was trying to be American Literature: almost exclusively miserable characters try to have one last family vacation together in sunny Mallorca. While the characters do grow - some even grow to be not unhappy - my fondness towards their predicaments didn't. What I did like about the book was that Straub confronts the double standard between men and women in relationships. I'll go back to Straub's work again, but I won't reread this book.

  • Light & Refreshing

This story is real from all character perspectives. Each family member has their own story, their own moment and their own flaws. This book shows that you can face make choices, make mistakes and show real emotions and make the best decision for yourself. There's always hope.

  • Boringggg

I did not enjoy, nothing interesting happened. I kept on reading it, waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. It was like reading a book with no plot, it was more like reading a tv show which was also boring.
