  • Loved this book

I loved this book. There are so many interesting people to meet! Barbara, the matriarch who needs to always be in control to the detriment of her children and ultimately herself. Rhys the son in the family, who married Mackenzie too young and becomes a friend rather than a husband, then resents the change in the relationship. Stephanie, Lori, and Catherine aka Four, three daughters who want to please their mother, but when they try to dance to her tune, really can't, and deal with their mother's irritation with them in very different ways. Mackenzie, the daughter-in-law. The prize. The pearl of great price. The one who has made the matriarch's dream a reality. The viticulturist who babies the grapes and then turns the juice into exquisite wine. A sought after vintner. A hard worker who loves the vines more than she loves some people. Everything is fabulous, a fairytale, until Mackenzie and Rhys realize they're not lovers any longer, friends maybe, and both looking to change their situation. After living in the family compound for her whole married life, Mckenzie will be giving up her family if she moves. She only wants one thing...a part of the winery her wines have elevated to top of the line status. When it becomes clear that won't happen, Mackenzie has to make some tough decisions. Not only for herself, but for others. A fabulous book by a masterful writer. I highly recommend!

  • An emotional story.

An emotional story and such great characters. I really liked Mackenzie, but Barbara, not so much. She sure is a piece of work. Barbara went from a sweet and loving mother-in-law to a selfish woman who will do anything to get her way. When the others don't do as she says, she feels they need to be punished. Barbara is the one person she thought she could count on. She could until Rhys and Mackenzie decided they would divorce. Mackenzie thought she knew how her life would be, but one day they realized that they were not husband and wife any longer. They are just roommates. She not only loses her husband, but her home and her job. She knows she can't stay where she is, but what will she do? Her sister-in-law is her best friend, will she lose her too? She is offered an amazing opportunity and is sure she needs to take it. It will really put her at odds with Barbara, but she knows it has to happen. She is also given another surprise. Is she up for the challenge.

  • I loved the setting

Mackenzie Dienes is a woman in her late thirties who has become a prestigious winemaker at her husband’s family run winery. She loves her career, her life on the estate, and her husband’s family. Her mother-in-law Barbara is the matriarch of the family and has high standards for both the winery and her children. She also has a reputation of being verbally abusive to her children. Mackenzie’s marriage has become more of a friendship over time, with each spouse having slept in separate bedrooms for the past five years. After an attempt a bringing some intimacy back to the relationship, it becomes apparent to the couple that their marriage is over. Mackenzie’s whole life for the past twenty years has been with this family and she has some difficult decisions to make. She could stay working at the winery as if nothing had happened. Alternatively, she could take this opportunity to set out and create her own winery - an adventure she has given some thought to in the past. This is time of great change for Mackenzie in more ways than one. Will she have the courage to take a chance and find a life that she truly desires? I really enjoyed this book. I love a book that speaks of life-altering events such as the end of a marriage with the empathy and sensitivity that this author employs. Her characters are well-developed and relatable. I learned about the life of a winemaker while reading the book and could feel the passion that Mackenzie had for her chosen career. I admired this character for her strength and tenacity and sheer drive to succeed. I thought the way that Barbara’s character evolved throughout the book to be realistic and somewhat expected given her inability to process change. The author nailed the dichotomy of these two women’s personalities and resilience. I recommend this book to those that enjoy fiction with strong female characters. Thanks to Edelweiss and Harlequin Publishing for the ARC of this book in exchange for the honest review provided here.

  • Beautifully written story

Even though I’ve purchased many of Susan Mallery’s books, this is the first book I’ve read of hers. I have a lot of catching up to do because I absolutely loved Mackenzie’s story. If anyone is debating reading this book, STOP! Grab this book and you’ll see why I fell in love with these wonderful characters. Sure, there’s a witch to really despise, but for the most part, you will be happily flipping the pages to see what happens next. As soon as times permits, I’ll definitely be reading more books from this author. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley and Harlequin and this is my voluntary and honest review.

  • Excellent. Add to your TBR list.

What happens when your 16 year marriage ends and your world changes. An excellent story about change, heartbreak, romance and coming home. This is an excellent read, with a little insight into the world of wine making (which I know nothing about other than drinking). Enjoy this one. Add to your TBR list.
