All Book Reviews

  • Extremely moving

Suspense worthy of Hitchcock, a touching coming-of-age story (the main narrator is a 12 year old girl), a road movie, a book about baseball, where the all-American sport can be seen as a symbol of the American dream, or more philosophically, as an allegory on all human existence, and, as with other Southern writers I am familiar with, like Tom Franklin or Ron Rash, a reflection on guilt and redemption. The author has achieved some perfectly beautiful scenes, like the bonding between a father and a daughter at a fairground! I highly recommend this novel as well as "A Land More Kind than Home" by the same author, which deals with many of the same themes.

    Thanks for your feedback!
