  • A suspenseful thriller of secrets and lies

Set in a small town in Iowa, "This is How I Lied" is the story of 15 year old friends Eve and Maggie and Eve’s 13 year old sister Nola. After Eve went missing in 1995. Maggie and Nola search for her and find her in a cave, murdered. Twenty five years later, in 2020, Eve’s murder remains unsolved. Maggie is now a detective with the local police department. A new piece of evidence is found, and it is hoped that modern DNA testing will enable the police to solve Eve's murder. Maggie, even months pregnant and on desk duty, is given this cold case to solve. The story is told in alternating chapters focusing on 1995 and on 2020. The reader learns of secrets through the years which affected the lives of many in the community. Eventually case is solved through modern DNA testing. This is a well-written thriller which kept my interest from beginning to end. A very good read.

  • This is How I Lied

This is How I Lied is the latest psychological thriller by Heather Gudenkauf. Lots of twists and turns and be prepared, there will come a time when it's impossible to put down! I want to thank Net Galley and Harlequin for an early copy to review.

  • Mystery, Cold Case, Suspense, Murder

This is How I Lied by Heather Gudenkauf Smash bang killed her in the first chapter BUT who killed her? Then, 25 years later her BFF is called in and told that new evidence has popped up after a boot, boot of the deceased cold case, has popped up. So, Maggie, laden and ready, nearly, to pop out her first born takes on the cold case of, “Who killed Eve?” At this point I have to admit I promised to do a Book Review and Blog Post so…am taking a break from the riveting reading to post the review (not finished) and tell you why you should read this book. What I like (so far): * Maggie, she seems to be on the job, in the marriage, willing to do what it takes to solve the mystery of who killed Eve 25 years before * Shaun: I think…haven’t seen enough of him yet BUT as a farmer and someone that Maggie is with…he probably is a good guy * The writing – well done and can’t get back to the story * That this is a cold case that might be solved with the use of DNA trace evidence on items saved from a previous crime scene * Plenty of red herrings * Wanting to get back to the story even though I should probably go to bed What I did not like * That Eve had to die to make this book happen, and that she suffered so much * That the bad guy got away with the murder for almost three decades * That I have not finished the book yet so have to return so I can find out what happened. Did/Do I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Yes Will I finish the book? Yes…at least I hope to! Thank you to NetGalley and HQN-Park Row Books for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4 Stars

  • Totally Absorbing & Suspenseful

This was one of those totally absorbing novels that I didn’t want to put down! Having read another of Heather Gudenkauf's novels, Before She Was Found, I was thrilled to be able to read this one, too. Even if I hadn't, the premise of this was novel was pretty exciting to me, as a keen crime fiction reader. Twenty-five years ago, Eve Knox, aged 16, was murdered and her body found in the caves near her home in small-town Grotto, Iowa by her best friend, Maggie, and Eve's sister, Nola. The case was never solved and now, further evidence has come to light. Maggie is now married, has worked hard at her job and has become Grotto PD detective Maggie Kennedy-O'Keefe. Heavily pregnant and soon to give birth, she is decides to take up the cold case... Right from the start, I was completely absorbed by the suspense and the intriguing story-line. Heather Gudenkauf effortlessly brings to life many interesting characters in this pacy and gripping crime thriller, as well as delving into the motives and thoughts of each of them. Deadly menace and dangerous secrets are uncovered and the author is in complete control as she brilliantly manoeuvres this tale, blurring the boundaries between right and wrong, crime and justice. Heather Gudenkauf’s skilled writing made this appear effortless, keeping the story flowing so that I was never bored. With many twists and turns, I was totally engaged all the way through, until the fulfilling and very strong conclusion. Overall, Heather Gudenkauf’s special way with the narrative made this compelling tale quite distinct, resulting in This Is How I Lied being a very worthwhile read. If you’re a fan of the genre, you should really read this book! I will certainly be looking out for more of this talented author’s work in the future. A special thank you to Park Row Books, the author, and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this novel at my request. This review is my unbiased opinion.

  • Gripping

Wow! What a roller coaster! This was my first book by Gudenkauf and I didn't know what to expect. Seeing the other reviews and ratings for the book, I was a bit worried that it wouldn't be 'all that' for me, but wow!!! Throughout the book, the characters develop in alternating POV's and differing time lines, revolving around the death of a teen girl, Eve, in a small Iowa town in the mid-1990's. The murder goes unsolved until a new piece of evidence is found in 2020. Maggie, now an adult and a cop - also very pregnant and Eve's best friend before she died - is put in charge of the new evidence and the resolution of the crime. And that new piece of evidence holds all the answers. But before that, Gudenkauf takes us on one heck of a ride! The differing POV's and time lines can get tough to get into - at least for me - but once I got familiar with the main characters, the story just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. And with the ending tied up and complete, I'm guessing this is a stand alone book, but I could see this as the start of a series really well too. Mystery, suspense, worry, thrills and chills - this one had it all. Read it! It lives up to all those high marks! Many thanks to the author and publisher, and to Net Galley, for an electronic ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
