    Padded, pretentious, self-indulgent

This book isn't really about time travel. There is some time travel in it but it is mostly philosophical musing about time itself, which seems like padding to make an academic paper, complete with self-indulgent, often irrelevant, footnotes, into a book that could be sold to a mass market. The language is pretentious and self-indulgent too, full of things like "perforce," "as it were," "pettifogging," and "Q.E.D." Actual information about the history of time travel could probably be under 50 pages, less if you took out the endless quotations from assorted books and other intellectuals musing about it.
