  • A fun, fast-paced fantasy thriller!

I read fantasy almost exclusively these days, as the genre has so many incredible options to choose from. I learned of Traitor's Blade on a Reddit group, and I am happy to tell you how enjoyable this first book in the series was for me. It flew by! I finished this book in one evening and had to get the next, Knight's Shadow right away. The characters are richly imagined and the plot is as exciting as any I've read in the past. 5 thumbs up! I recommend that you give it a go!!

  • My New Favorite

This book has sat on my shelf for years, and now I wish I hadn't let it sit for so long, because this is one of the best books I've read in 2021. Nearly everything I love in a book is here: Exceptional characters, heart, humor, action, adventure, wit, and charm. It's all I can do not to dive straight into the sequel right now. It only took three pages for me to like the characters. By the time I reached the end, I was ready to follow them everywhere. I could go on about how Brasti is a charmer, Kest's dry wit is perfection, Valiana and Aline are so well created. But Falcio is next level. Not only is he admirable for sticking to his beliefs, but he is willing to fight to his last breath to keep them, despite all the hardships. He falters, but never loses his way. He is a hero through and through and I genuinely can't wait to see where he goes next. Every relationship in this book is expertly crafted, and while there are moments of fantastic humor, de Castell never sacrifices the heart and danger of the plot. It's an intense book and does require some suspension of disbelief, but it reminds me of The Three Musketeers (a comparison that it must get a lot but not without good reason): You care so much about Falcio, Brasti, and Kest that you wince whenever they are put in true danger. De Castell has such a strong voice with his prose, the pacing is perfect, and the world is unique. I had the time of my life reading this book and desperately wanted more. It is a gem in the fantasy genre and should not be missed. Highly recommended to all lovers of fantasy adventure, The Three Musketeers, and stellar characters.
