a reminder of a cruel, unjust past

Written in the language of the time, the author successfully relays how the life of slavery was relentless, miserable and cruel, and yet through perserverence, chance and eventual support from the enlightened few, the author eventually escapes its bonds. Told with comparative un-politically correct language and innocence of the author and of the period. Don't let that put you off.

    Heartbreaking...

Why is this not on every high school and/or college reading list? Man's inhumanity to man occurs in every society and civilization, but such down to earth first hand experiences are uncommon.
