    A Strange, Amusing Daydream

I enjoyed this novel, though it's more of a vignette. It was strange, colorful, thought-provoking, and funny. However, I would warn some readers who like things like "plot" and "resolution" that this book doesn't really go anywhere. It seems in retrospect like a dream you have while taking a nap: It is connected to reality, but only a bit. It has a beginning, but it doesn't have an end--you just wake up. Likewise, this book takes place in a fascinating world that you would like to know more about, but much of it is left to your imagination. At the end, you get the impression that the story is going on without you. If you're OK with that, you may like this book. If not, you may find it frustrating, or you may wonder if it was worth your time. If you're intrigued, just go into it with the expectation that you will read it for the joy of reading itself (there's lots of wordplay and word-painting). Do not expect much of a story or plot. All in all, it would make for a great read on a vacation in fall or winter.
