    Archaeological adventures and romance

Dr. Layne Rush is leading a dig out near Luxor when she is beset by sabotage and someone assaulting her. The dig sponsor, the university, hires some security for her, the firm Treasure Hunter Security, and dispatches Declan Ward with a team to keep her safe. Her attacker is out to find the lost city of Zerzurra, and she holds the ability to navigate there. Dec has a history with the bad guy, though, and is determined to protect Rush until she can get her artifacts back to her sponsors. Declan enjoys his job but is haunted by the way he left the Navy. He may be attracted to Layne, but he pulls an “I’m no good for you” which she thankfully disabuses him of. She’s had tragedies of her own, and uses the help she’s gotten over the years to help kick him out of some bad patterns of thinking. They’re fun together, both intense and focused, and the intimate scenes are likewise delicious. We get plenty of details that set the atmosphere of the dig and following adventures. Sand, hot, and danger are conveyed without wearing on the reader. How’s the author going to make Zerzurra happen, I wondered. The twist there is something I didn’t see coming and leads to some great adventures with nature obstacles. Hackett’s amazing at action scenes, and these are easy to visualize and follow. I've read many books by this author, and a theme that seems to crop up some recently is a near-death experience triggering the heroine's "yes let's do it, life's too short” change of heart regarding sex with the hero. While memento mori in real life often primes us for sex, with Layne’s earlier objections to going further it felt a bit oddly timed and convenient to me. Likewise, the bad guy was very conveniently bad, just a dangerous psychopath with not very many layers to him. I love that Declan’s treasure hunter mother makes an appearance. Someday I’ll want to read about how she met her Professor Ward. I received a free ARC for review purposes.
