    Interesting

“Varina” tells the story of Jefferson Davis’s wife from her childhood to her death. It is both an intimate story of an intelligent, educated woman and her struggles with slavery, a world run by men and a difficult husband, and an account of mid 19th century America and the brutality of the Civil War. I enjoyed this book, learning about a lesser-known, but powerful and brilliant woman.

    good but troubling read.

I like the historical context prior to, during and after the civil war. The book portrays the journey of a very interesting woman during hard times as slavery in one form draws to a close with all the chaos, hardships and confused loyalties.

    A Sad tale

Varina details the very sad life of Jefferson Davis' wife and their children. She endured a lot of upheavals because of his assignments and lost most of her children befgore her own death.
