  • One of the Best Novels of 2015

This is a truly amazing novel. Lila Bowen gives us a hero/heroine, Nettie Lonesome, who would be described as transgender and bisexual in today's terminology. Nettie is a sexually complex character in a context (the Old West) that had no language to describe her. Bowen does a superb job of making Nettie relatable while never once veering into sentimentality or "PC" preachiness. The novel is written in the vernacular of the Old West, and the author maintains an authentic voice throughout the whole book, never once falling into anachronism. The writing is superb, and so is the story, a coming-of-age tale that combines classic Western themes with folklore and magical realism. Definitely one of the best novels of 2015.

    Thanks for your feedback!
