An exciting new series from Lindsay!

I'm a huge fan of Lindsay's (I have all her books), and this one didn't disappoint. I admit to feeling the need to go back and skim through the Salt and Swords books again for a refresh after finishing this one, just to quench my eagerness to read the next book. I really like Yanko; he managed to remain a very decent human being, intelligent, passionate and unassuming even after life throws him unexpectedly on the path of growing up fast. I believe that, deep down, he has a sense of self-worth and strives to succeed against all odds as he embarks on this adventure. He's also kind of lucky, I guess, in meeting people who are persuaded to help him even if reluctantly. The pace is quick, the dialogues funny and the world is interesting. I really look forward to see this story develop. I received the book for free from the author, which got me excited as I got to read it sooner, but I would have bought it anyway asap!

fantasy, adventure, humor, lots of action

Readers new to this world can enjoy this as a stand-alone novel. There is enough recap so that new readers won't be lost, but not enough to spoil it for those who have not yet read the other books. Long-time readers will not be bored by too much recap. I highly recommend any readers who have not yet done so, to check out both the Emperor's Edge and Swords and Salt series, as well as the related books Encrypted, Enigma, and Decrypted. You won't want to miss out on all the fun. Great fantasy/adventure series, with humor and lots of action; anyone from teens to age 99 and up can enjoy these. I am looking forward to more adventures in this new series, with Yanko, Dak, Lakeo and that very rude parrot, as well as cameos by characters from the other books. It was fun seeing what Akstyr is up to these days, in this book. Seems like he'd get on well with the parrot. Or perhaps not.

    A fun read!

Starts off similar to 95% of the fantasy books out there but once it finally gets going (about 1/3rd the way in) I found it quite entertaining. Just getting tired of the typical 'living a mundane life and suddenly strange people are chasing me' start to most books in this genre. The author's Emporor's Edge series start was a refreshing change.

A welcome return to the Emperor's Edge universe

This is a great story! It takes place in the "Emperor's Edge" universe, but there is no need to have read the previous series in order to enjoy this one. (The collection of short stories "Swords and Salt" is good to have read, however, as it gives an introduction to the main characters and their relationships.) You can't help but feel for Yanko, who tries so hard to succeed but his youth often gets the best of him! I can't forsee any romantic connections, but the adventure is enough to keep the story going! Can't wait for Book 2.

    Warrior Mage

Pretty boring! I guess you get what you pay for. Never seemed to go anywhere. May go back and finish if I have nothing else to read.
