  • Dark and depressing. Not at all what I expected.

About slave boy at plantation on Barbados in the 1800s. From the book's cover, I expected it to be at least somewhat lighthearted - maybe a kind of "Around The World in 80 Days" type of book but it was nothing like that at all. Extremely dark and depressing with no real resolution at the end. I appreciated that it reminded me of the brutality and horrors of slavery. Frustrating that there was no reasonable explanation for why a cousin kills himself or why the main character was set up to be implicated in the death. Copyright September 2018.
