    Great read

4.5 stars - This book was a joy to read, Wash was an interesting and endearing character who you rooted for until the very end. An fascinating combination of the history of slavery & emancipation and early science. It left me with a lot to think about, which is the sign of a good book.

I expected a better ending. It felt rushed towards the end. Otherwise it’s an easy read and a gripping tale

    Rich story

Well written. Great prose. After reading this imaginative and compelling story, I felt cheated at the ending. Not sure if I would recommend investing the time in reading it.

    Washington Black

The authors writing grabs the reader from the beginning and her characters in particular are both original and compelling. Wash as he was often called lived a dramatic life going from one life threatening existence to another but never totally giving up. Eventually he finds himself by involvement with his first love of marine life and discovers what was driving his early mentor Tich who didn’t succeed in doing the same for himself. An intriguing journey for both.
