A Romance that's Rough Around the Edges

I feel like the genre Contemporary Romance gives people the impression of something light and fluffy and full of romantic gushiness. Those are the first labels most people think of when they hear Contemporary Romance. However, sometimes there is more to it than that. Sometimes it is nothing like that. This book, for instance, is not light or fluffy. There are no big romantic gestures that come merely to appease the audience. And there is no gush. This book is about the more tragic kinds of love. It's hard and rough around the edges. It shows how love can hurt. How it can be brutal. I enjoyed the story. It wasn't what I come to expect from the genre and I welcomed it. There are lots of heart-wrenching moments throughout. The ending was very intense and I couldn't put it down for about the last 50 pages.

    4 Stars

A.L. Jackson is one of my favorite authors. She's auto buy and auto read. This book I first bought as an audible book and listened as I was taking a vacation. I had a really difficult time enjoying that version. I didn't connect with the characters and stopped part way through because the narrator wasn't working for me. When I stopped listening and started reading, I began to fall into the story a bit more. The angst and drama kept me interested even if at times it seemed a bit much. By the end I was in book heaven but I just didn't love the beginning. I really think it was more the narrator than the story but overall this story was good but just not my favorite from this author. At some point I'm going to do a reread and see if I can't fall in love from the beginning this time.
