  • Not safe being a first responder

Well developed, complex characters whose lives have been touched by tragedy had this reader cheering on Pete & Zoe as they struggle in their relationship amidst danger from someone shooting at First Responders. A very enjoyable reading experience and the shooter isn't revealed until the end. Zoe Chambers is a paramedic and a deputy coroner. Pete Adams is the Vance County Police Chief. These two have a history that includes a bungled romance. Rose Bassi and her daughter Allison return home early, but insist Zoe stay living in their home for now. EMS partner Earl and his family would like Zoe to move in with them while she sorts out her life. Remote emergency call outs have left first responders dead and others shot in all of the branches of emergency services. The responders al lhave a common link in Lucy Livingston. From the complex bits of information about each character, I think I would enjoy reading books 1-3 in this series, even knowing the outcome of their stories to date. I received a copy of this book through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

  • A fast-paced read, right to the end!

This is my first introduction to Annette Dareofy and the Zoe Chambers series and WOW, what an introduction! This book hits you right from the start and the action doesn't let up until the very last page. To say it was a page-turner is an understatement! Even though this is the fourth book in the series you can read it as a stand-alone. There was enough backstory and character description to be able to embrace the series and not get lost. For those who have read the previous three, there is no feeling like you are rereading the previous books in the series, which I know I appreciate in any series! However, having said that, there were plenty of little nuggets sprinkled throughout the story that got me hooked and wanting to know everything that happened in the first three books (so you know where my next stop will be, that's right, I will be one-clicking those three books as soon as I am done with this post!) Like I said, this book had me right from the start! I read it quickly and didn't want to put it down! The plot itself is very well written and well developed and had me right on the edge of my seat. I was a nervous wreck through most of the story and felt like I was living it right with the characters. This story was part cozy mystery and part thriller and the ending had a twist I didn't see coming. I loved that I had no idea the whodunit of the book and I was kept guessing and re-guessing right up until the end. Characters, let's just say the characters in this book are an awesome bunch! I love that Zoe is a smart cookie and didn't feel like she had to solve this very dangerous mystery all by herself, somehow that made the story much more believable for me. Overall, With a Vengeance was a fast-paced read packed with action and enough gooey scenes between Zoe and Pete that I simply can't wait for the next book in the series to be released!
