A heart-wrenching coming of age story

As someone who isn't too familiar with cultural beliefs of other cultures (those that are not Western), this book was extremely eye-opening. The idea of arranged marriage is something I have no exposure to, and what exposure I do have is coloured in western stereotype and prejudice. So that made this book hard to read at times because the side of arranged marriage it shows is not always a pleasant one. And knowing that this is happening to young women around the world as you read it makes it hard to swallow it all. I often found myself "yelling" at Naila to "do your own thing!" but at the same time, I realize it's easy for me to say that as someone on the outside looking in. I think in order to read this book and not become frustrated with it, you have to keep an open mind and realize that not everyone has the same freedoms that you do. I also think it is important not to think of this book as full-blown romance as it really is about Naila's coming of age and finding her own voice.
