  • Math as a super power!

Zero Sum Game features a woman who is crazy good at math and deeply in touch with her body. She can do unlikely things. I would give you some examples, but I think reviews are generally supposed to be spoiler-free. At any rate, the MC goes up against a person who can talk anyone to their side. Can she math her way out of brainwashing? The next book is on my TBR pile. https://lizharkness.com/2019/07/13/books-july/

  • (INSERT MATH JOKE HERE)

Would I have stayed up past 2 AM reading this if I had work the next day, maybe not, bit I didnh't, so I did. Really, really good work. Huang's depiction of a maybe-not-technically-SUPERpower is amazing, and she's not afraid to sacrifice characters when need be. Further kudos for the relationship between Cas and Arthur, which avoids a very, very common authorial mistake.

  • Nohing for me

The story could have been good, but the science and tech is too much Hollywood movie level for my taste.

  • Darkly beautiful

Once I started reading Zero Sum Game, my to-do list was forgotten. Beautifully written, complex, and nuanced, it was impossible to put down. Plot is described elsewhere so I won't rehash that here. The book is taut, riveting, violent, but ultimately about the moral complexities posed by free will and about tentative but brave new beginnings. The characters receive little physical description but their personalities are intimately detailed and in their own way, each is seeking redemption. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
