Not meant for light weekend reading

Possibly minor spoilers ahead. I'm not sure what to rate this book at all. For fans of dark humor, much of the book is hilarious in its blasé attitude towards disgusting (and sometimes horrifying) moments. Flitting from topic to topic as though eating disorders, systemic abuse, a broken down car and helpful shop workers are all deserving of the same tone as they all annoy Eileen an equal amount. There were moments of laughing out loud, while cringing, it was a good time. While the beginning of the book carried along, a lot of notes and descriptors felt purposely written in a way that mocks other writing styles. Often the book felt like a satire of the way male authors write women. Taking something that is normally objectifying and applying it to a dimensional, and horrible woman takes on a completely different tone when discussing her plain appearance and flat chest. Overall, I enjoyed the beginning and end of the novel, but it dragged an incredible amount in the middle. With 200 pages of set up, the (very well done) ending is still mildly unsatisfying. We spend so much time with Eileen leading up to the events, but they take almost no time to unfold and conclude. I would have loved if either the middle had been severely whittled down, or the ending fleshed out a bit more in line with the earlier scenes.

    made me laugh and cry

Such a dark, yet enchanting read. While I pity Eileen, I also love her sardonic vision of her world, as well as her efforts to connect despite her life of abuse and trauma.

    I couldn’t finish it

What a story of horror told over and over again! After a few chapters I. Started to just thumb through the pages since the same descriptions of squalor came page after page. For some reason I need to find something uplifting in a book, if only a nugget of truth. There was nothing in this book to hold me.
