    Beautiful!

Lillian, Lily, Bliant knows three things – 1) love is conditional; 2) to her father she’s never met those conditions; and 3) if it weren’t for her aunt and cousins she would never know what it’s like to have someone care. Brought to London to find a husband of her father’s choosing Lily works to discourage anyone’s suit. Until she meets on man she cannot dissuade. A man who’s her father’s perfect candidate, which for that reason alone makes her unacceptable. Lord Maxwell James, Max, Warrick does his best to avoid match-making mama’s. Now it seems it’s a match-making father seeking a match between him and the man’s seemingly unacceptable daughter. The fact she is “unacceptable” and the cousin of his best friend raises his curiosity. Upon seeing the lady his curiosity is further piqued and the more time he spends with her the more he comes to care about her. But does he care enough to spend the rest of his life with her and can he convince the lady that it’s her and not the riches she brings with her? Lily knows the only reason Max is courting her is for the astronomical dowry her father has settled on her and the absurd conditions to be included in the marriage settlement. After all she’s not worthy of anyone. However, Max’s reaction to those conditions take her by surprise and the wall around her heart cracks a little. Fortune smiles on the pair giving them time to spend together but at the end of that time, before Lily can explain, Max assumes she’s rejecting him once again. From that point Fate plays a cruel hand in keeping these two apart. Lily runs instead of marrying the decrepit old man her father has picked. When Max learns she has run he vows to find her before her father does. A vow that could cost him his life. Once he finds her can he convince her that it’s her he cares about and not her money? Can Lily overcome everything she fears or will her father continue to run her life? From the moment I read that first sentence I despised Lily’s father. That feeling only intensified as the story progresses. My heart wept for Lily and what she’d endured and fell in love with Max as he tried to show Lily that she was worthy of love and so much more. Lily is written as a strong character who does what she must for self-preservation while taking charge of her own future. And Max, Max is the strong determined hero with a secret heart of gold. Jane Charles has once again shown how she can capture a reader and not let them go until “The End”. I’m hoping we see more of these characters in the near future.
