  • A Little Slow For Me, But...

DUNE is a classic and I was really looking forward to reading it and learning about its influence on science fiction. I didn't really know what to expect, but epic is definitely a great term for it. The story was deep and complex, the lore is rich, the action and treachery occur often, and the characters were complicated. That said, I don't think I was the right audience for it. That's definitely not to say it's a bad book because it absolutely is not and I can see how it influenced future books in its genre. I really enjoyed some of the side characters like Gurney, Chani, and Jessica. I would have liked to spend a lot more time with them, Chani especially since their backstories were quite interesting. I'm probably going to sound like a bad person, but I wasn't actually a huge fan of Paul. Not to say he's not an engaging or interesting main character, but I found him to be way too arrogant at some points, and emotionally distant. I think my biggest complaint about the book, and again, this is probably just my opinion, but I found the pacing to be waaaaay too slow, yet things would be resolved super quickly, if they were resolved at all. There would be things the characters would think that seemed a little out of the blue for me, which added to my dislike to Paul in particular. I know I complained a lot about this classic, but my nitpicks don't detract from what truly is a grand, apocalyptic epic with devious enemies, betrayals, tension, and a superb journey. It's the kind of book I definitely recommend to anyone looking for a desert story and any reader curious about what inspired an entire genre of scifi and post-apocalyptic fiction.

  • Dune

I read it in 1965 when it first came out and have reread it so many times over the years. It is a true ethnographic classic encompassing religion, politics, ecology, environment, mysticism. As a trained anthropologist, I have found it rich with identifying a world with all its twist and turns. Though written in the science fiction category, it is more than that. For those who have found it slow, just remember the artichoke, you keep pealing back the leaves until you come to the heart.

  • Monarchy on a galactic scale

This is one of my favorite novels, hands down. A rich exploration of psychology, religion, political organization, and power, with an accurate but not overpowering understanding of desert ecology used for the setting. Highly recommended for lovers of both sci-fi and fantasy.

  • Sci-Fi classic

Complex relationships, motivations, and landscapes rich mysticism and imaginative inter-plays. A beautifully rendered imagining of a future infused with tradition and lord from the past. A sci-fi classic.
