  • A joy to read!

Every once in a while a book that is a joy to read ends up in your hands. This was one of those books. Initially this book completely escaped my notice but then I started seeing some really great reviews for it from a lot of different people. I saw a bandwagon and decided to jump on. I am so glad that I did. This book was such a surprise for me. I hoped that I would like it but I never expected to love it. Once I got about midway through the book, I didn't put it down until I turned the last page. The characters in this story are great. I had hoped that I would like the characters when I started reading this book. I never dreamed for a moment that I would love them. The four main characters at the heart of this book are all very different from each other and I really felt like I got to know them over the course of the book. There were times that I felt like the book was really focusing on one character more than the others but then the focus would move on to the next character for a while. I really enjoyed getting to know all four members of the group. This book starts out in detention. Simon, Bronwyn, Addy, Cooper, and Nate are the only students in detention that day but after a terrifying emergency only four students ever get to leave. Simon is rushed to the hospital where he later dies. The authorities think that one or all of the other students might be responsible for his death since Simon was about to reveal big secrets about each person on his gossip blog. The mystery in this book was really very well done. I had no idea what happened to Simon. I would come up with a theory only to realize that I had to be wrong soon after. I was literally guessing until the end of the book. I also really felt for each of the characters as their secrets were revealed. All four really go through a major life change during the course of this book. I would highly recommend this book to others. This was a very smartly written story that was next to impossible to put down. I am very impressed by the fact that this is the first book written by Karen M. McManus. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. I received an advance reader edition of this book from Random House Children's - Delacorte Press via NetGalley.

  • A Fun, Easy to Read Mystery

This book ended up being just as addicting as I thought it would. The whole time I was reading I was trying to pick apart what happened just so I could figure out who the killer was. I even ended up being partially right! One of Us Is Lying was one of those books where things aren't as they seem. You think you've got everything figured out and then something changes and nothing makes sense again. It was really fun to read and if you're a fan of mysteries then you'll love this one. All the characters were great (props for having a diverse cast of characters) and I loved how they each interacted with each other. Plus they were all SO different from each other yet they all had some things in common. Even without the mystery it would have been fun to read about them. The only reason it didn't get five full star from me was that I was expecting a little more crazy. I thought the murderer's plan would be so outrageous that I would have never thought of it. That's just a me thing though. I like the unexpected. I'd still recommend this book to any YA mystery lover! If you like puzzles without anything extreme then this is the perfect book for you!

  • Delightfully tropey

I really liked this. It was different than I thought it would be and is much less of a murder mystery than an analysis of teenager life. The mystery was pretty decent, although I know that several people have said they knew who the killer was within the first chapter. And yeah... it's fairly obvious when you think about it. But I read it as less about the mystery and more about the relationships between these five people, and that's really what kept me reading. Yes it was definitely tropey, so if you don't like classic YA tropes then you probably won't like this one. You have the bad boy (Nate), the nerdy girl (Bronwyn), the popular girl (Addy), the baseball star (Cooper), and finally the outcast (Simon). The book starts out with these tropes, but even as you go along you discover that they aren't just defined by those tropes, but also OTHER tropes too. But you know what? It doesn't matter. I liked the book. I liked the characters. It was simple and fun. It wasn't life-changing, but I did devour it. A good YA read for me! (Which doesn't really happen all the often for me anymore)

  • Wow!

This book was absolutely amazing. I stayed up late into the night reading this bok. The plot was very well devised, attracting the attention away from the obvious. The mystery made me really think, however I did guess who the culprit was (but not because it was badly written). This was a really intricate story, weaving the different perspectives into each other. The further I got into the story, the more suspense there was. If I had to critize this, I would say that the characters are kind of cliche and average of that stereotype. The character's secrets were also a bit cliche. I'm also glad that they included LGBTQ+. The evidence builds up during the book, making you think who the culprit is. This is a solid 5 star rating, due to the interesting story that's easy to get hooked on. I can't wait to read the author's next book!

  • I couldn’t stop!

This book had me from the very first sentence! Just when I thought that I had everything figured out, I got hit with another twist! Loved every second of it! Sadly, it realistically portrays the seriousness of how tiny things play into much larger things within the worlds of our youth, today. Great read!
