    A Complex Family Story

"The Things We Cannot Say" is a powerful story of love, loss and resilience. In alternating chapters, Rimmer tells the story of Alina and Tomas, young Polish couple during the early years of WWII, and Alice and her grandmother Hanna, living in present day Florida. Hanna, in her 90’s and ailing, enlists Alice’s help to discover what became of her family in Poland after she fled in the early 1940’s. Alice leaves her husband and two children to travel to Poland; what she discovers is a shock to both Alice and her family as well as to the reader. A great read!

    Amazingly Poweful

Though heartbreaking at times this book is also uplifting. Both protagonist touch the reader in different ways but the power of love to rise above all else is is the main theme. A book that will rivet you.

This book will make you smile, cry, think and care

This book made me smile, cry and forget; these were characters in a book, not friends or family. The history was important as it opened up a part of WWII that I hadn’t been aware. It was shocking and very sad, what happened in Poland. This book made it very personal. The characters were real. The story had twists and turns I never would have imagined. This book touched and surprised me in so many ways. The ending, I could not have imagined. I recommend reading this book, it will touch you and you won’t forget it.

A long and drawn out tale

This book certainly showed the Polish history and atrocities in WW 2. I liked the plot of Alina and Tomas , (western spelling) but found the first part of the book to be slow moving. Alice seemed to be a complaining, control freak who worried about everything and could not delegate because of her own self importance that I found her personality bordered on martyrdom and imagined self sacrifice. Her family issues such as raising a bright child and an autistic one may have shown some difficulties but were nothing like the cruel journeys of the people during the war. It was very annoying to read about her boring life when she had a warm home, food and family. A more shorter present day subplot would have produced a more satisfying and suspenseful tale. An okay novel but certainly not of the same caliber as novels such as that of “ The Huntress “ and “Code Name Verity” in writing style and plot.
