    Fun Victorian Romance

A Lady's Code of Misconduct is a romance about a young man who is master manipulator and a young lady who is willing to do whatever she can to escape an unwanted marriage and the evil guardianship of her uncle. When we first meet our heroine Jane, she is a quiet ghost of a girl who tries to stay in the shadows of her uncle's home as much as she can. She is clever and quick-witted but she hides these aspects of her personality for the sake of her own self-preservation. When our questionable hero Crispin is introduced, he is very much a predator, always on the look-out for a victim to bilk or to exploit in his quest for more power. I liked Jane from the beginning and empathized with her over her powerlessness and precarious position in society. Women of her time were truly at the mercy of their male relatives and her uncle had very little mercy held in store for her. I understood completely her plot to escape her uncle and applauded her attempts and ultimate victory. Crispin isn't terribly likable in much of the book, but honestly I can't imagine that Duran intended for the reader to think he is a nice guy from the beginning. I ended up liking him well enough, but I never quite understood what really caused him to be as big of villain as he was in the start of the book. I get that his family failed him and treated him shabbily but there were things he did that seemed borderline sociopathic. I get that his little boy feelings were hurt real bad but that doesn't excuse everything. Also, I found the political aspects of the book super boring. I don't enjoy reading about 150 year old fictional political machinations in Victorian England. Call me crazy. I can see why this info was important to the storyline. However, I had to drag myself through the political parts of the book. I would recommend this book to romance fans and feel that it is a great example of a well written period romance with an HEA. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

    So-so...

Love Meredith Duran and her writing is superb but this story is not one of my favourites. Not a patch on Duke of Shadows and most other of her pervious books. The writing is excellent, as always, but the story was flat and the chemistry between Crispin and Jane was just not there. I found that it lacked depth and an emotional connection to either the story or the protagonists . I really struggled to get to the end of the book....which has never happened to me with a Meredith Duran book before! Too long winded. I was bored....and I find politics quite interesting!🤔 Disappointed!....can only hope Lockwood's story (coming soon and long awaited) is better and more like Auburn's..for drama, story, romance and connection. Will chalk this one up as a blip on an otherwise great authors library.

    Wonderful Victorian book

A LADY’S CODE of MISCONDUCT is the best Victorian romance I’ve read! The fifth book in RULES FOR THE RECKLESS SERIES, I have to give this book FIVE BIG HEARTS!!!! This is the first book I’ve read where I felt the amnesia trope was well executed. The plot is cleverly written. A sham marriage, political intrigue, and a case of amnesia this story is sure to delight. Lord Crispin Burke and Lady Jane have known each other for a long time as Crispin was a frequent visitor to her Uncle’s house. Crispin is handsome, arrogant and condescending, and not a likeable man. He doesn’t trust anyone. Lady Jane is stuck in her Uncle’s household with her uncle controlling her inheritance. About the time she is to be forced into a marriage with her cousin, she makes a deal with the devil, Lord Crispin; if she spy’s in her Uncle’s household for him he will help her avoid marriage and escape. The plan changes when an attempt on Lord Crispin’s life leaves him on death’s doorstep. The doctors feel it is a matter of days until he dies from his head wound. Lady Jane seeing her plan to spy in exchange for being rescued going down the drain, seizes upon another means of escape. She falsifies marriage documents stating she and Lord Crispin are married. Never expecting Lord Crispin to recover, but he does recover except he has no recollection of the last 5 years. The characters are well developed and the author does a superb job of showing us how this incident gives both the hero and heroine a chance to grow. Crispin learns about his past bit by bit, and what a terrible reckless person he was, and is able to meld himself into a person worthy of Lady Jane’s love. He learns that Jane is the one person in the world he can trust. The dialogue between the characters is excellent. There is a political side to the plot which is well drawn and totally believable. Lady Jane has lied to everyone about being married. So she has her own growing to do. As their relationship develops and Lady Jane garners a new perspective on Lord Crispin, and on herself, the story heats up and there are some very steamy sex scenes. Buy this book and go on their journey and I know you won't be disappointed. I received my copy of A LADY’S CODE OF MISCONDUCT from Romance Junkies Reviews in exchange for my unbiased review.

    Brought together by desperation ...

Brought together by desperation ... Crispin and Jane seem like total opposites. He's a darkly brooding man with a past. She's used to life's finer things, raised with the utmost of class. When circumstance removes the rose colored glasses from this woman of means, she will stop at nothing to even the score. Yet will her plan of action, be her biggest risk or their greatest gain? A Lady's Code of Conduct is a courageous trek through the ravishes of a broken heart as it travels the pathway to love. Meredith Duran turns darkness into light with this wickedly enchanting read.
