My favorite of the series yet

I won’t lie, Miss Hayes is my go-to author when I need some happy, and I’ve really come to adore the group of friends featured in the Leaning Into Stories series. And now, I have a new favorite. Though I didn’t set out to skip Nick’s story, I ended up reading the series a bit out of order, which worked fine as all of these books can be read as a standalone. With the Leaning Into Stories holiday novella release date fast approaching, I decided to remedy that. Funny enough, I think reading Nick’s story after the others gave me the opportunity to appreciate the character development in Leaning Into the Fall that much more. In the other books of the series, Nick comes across as slightly oblivious to social cues and generally self-involved. Oft-referred to as “the absent-minded professor” by his friends, it’s clear his attitude isn’t mean-spirited on his part. However, it didn’t necessarily endear him to me either. While I always expected there was a lot more to his character, I hadn’t anticipated just how well developed his character would be in Leaning Into the Fall. The raw emotion, confusion, and frustration Miss Hayes tapped into telling this story was incredible. She truly made Nick’s character come alive, allowing the reader to experience his ups and downs right alongside him. I don’t know that Nick was technically a character in need of a redemption, but it felt a little like that. The amount of growth he went through in this book made it a story that will be impossible to forget. Although Nick stole the show for me in this book, I can’t deny that Wes was an equally incredible hero with an interesting story. I loved how he approached Nick’s moments of genius and uncertainty, and the steady presence he provided proved that he was the perfect partner for Nick. Beyond that I liked watching his personality really shine as he and Nick found their way together. I enjoyed the ebb and flow of this romance so much. Though this wasn’t a love story teeming with angst, it certainly felt like every good moment was earned. I expected this book to explain a bit more about Nick’s personality, but I never expected to end up loving him (and Wes) as much as I did. Leaning Into the Fall is one of those books that caught me completely off guard, even choking me up at times with the intensity and honesty of the emotions as Nick tried to navigate his relationship with Wes. If you love stories with more eccentric characters who have an incredible depth to them, I highly recommend this title.

    Good M/M Romance

This was a really entertaining novel. I'm not generally into age-gap stories, but this wasn't a huge gap and the story was well done.
