One of my favorite reads of the year! I loved it!

1878 Scotland (majority is set in Scotland though it starts off in London.) This book starts off in London as a severely abused and terrorized Lady Philomena St. Vincent, Viscountess Benchley whom most call Mena, had been both mentally and physically abused and terrorised by her own philanderer and sadomasochistic husband, Viscount Gordon St. Vincent and his family. To get rid of her against and for revenge they lied and declared her criminally insane though the high court in England. Then they committed her to the corrupt, evil, rundown, Belle Glen Asylum! It was run by evil sadistic Doctors, nurses and orderlies. The staff committed the most atrocious, heinous and perverse, evil acts on theirs terrorized patients! They falsely calling it treatments but it was torturous punishments! On top of that calling her mad and giving her a perverse nickname as well. Mena’s new prison was hell on earth. Previously they had not touched her physically where marks or scars were seen due to her noble title, but there were other ways to torment and torture patients like her! This was done in case the nobility might change their mind and want the unwanted wife returned. Now Belle Glen receive word was she was to be their guest indefinitely, for the remainder of her life! Her evil husband had run out of her money so she was now useless to him. Luckily she snuck a letter one of her noble friends praying someone would know her dire straits. Just as she was about to be severely abused in the worst way some dear friends husband’s came to her rescue and got her out of her personal hell on earth! In this time a married woman was helpless if fell under a husband's ire or disregard. Under his authority to do with her as he wished like an animal with no regard or protection for the wife’s life. Unless you had powerful family as far as the law was concerned. Now Mena was also a fugitive of the crown for running away from her sadistic husband and his family. So her noble friends came up with a scheme since their Scottish Marquess friend, Laird William Grant Ruaridh MacKenzie, retired colonial, known to most as Liam, was in need of a governess for his two teenage children. Some also call him the Demon Highlander. The only thing was she needed a new identity and to stay in hiding and knew never to reveal her secrets to anyone ever! Ravencroft Castle, Scotland Liam MacKenzie know as The Demon has many secrets of his own. Being a man of war, plus Liam had been married to an insane woman and brought up by a monster. His father was a sadistic, cruel man, who got off on others pain. He wanted his sons to be brought up in his image. It was no wonder he was known as the Demon of the Highlands! He stayed away from his children for this fear alone until he realised they were totally gout of control. Always chasing away each governess and they needed education and to be taught how to behave Especially with his daughters first season only a year away. So Philomena meets this Demon Marquee Laird, not under the best of circumstances, with a carriage with a broken wheel. When he and his men come to meet and retrieve her it's not under the best of circumstance. As she doesn't believe he is the Marquess Ravencroft! He and are men are filthy and looks nothing like a Marquess should more like a dirty pirate or Highway men! As Liam and his men had previously put out a fire and were covered in mud and soot. Plus he is young and handsome not old and fat like a retired Colonel should in her opinion. Plus she is the first person to look him in the eye and put him in his place! This starts the sparks between these two, not to mention Mena giving explicit instructions of how to repair the wheel! As time goes by a lot of suspicious accidents are happeniing on his lands. He is immediately attracted to his ravishing green eyed, governess with the body of a goddess! Liam notices how things seem to run better when she is around This is far from one sided as she sees the goodness on this battle hardened warrior who also has his personal demons, unseen scars and terrors like herself. Besides under Liam’s braw, virile beauty she sees his turmoil with himself. Mena also sees his intense love for those he cares about too. It's the first time she has felt safe in five years. “If only she wasn't married”, she felt herself thinking more often than not. Also holding herself in check to not fall in love or she will leave with a broken heart! Then someone they both trust puts herself and Liam in mortal danger, but not only that it's the worst betrayal that is revealed. Are these two able survive it physically, but even if they do can they ever forgive and forget - The Highlander by Kerrigan Byrne is my favorite of this exquisite trilogy! One of my favorite reads for 2016, captivated with many twists and turns, Loved it! **I received this ARC from the publisher, St. Press for an honest review through netgalley**

    another emotiona read LOVE IT

Again Ms. Byrne reaches in grabbing your heart as she takes you through the day and life of these characters. I would have dearly loved to have had a one on one with Philomena husband I doubt he would have been a happy camper when the chat was over that is if he lived through it. There are many ways for a person to abuse another and I think her husband takes the cake. This was a very emotional read for me as you watch two people go through life just trying to get by with the demons they have haunting them. These characters are complex as they take your heart for a spin as they tell the story of their life getting you so hook you can’t put the book down. The author starts out with a bang as she shocks you with a tale of one women and her stay in the Asylum where her husband put her after 5 years of marriage just because she didn’t produce a child. He moved on leaving her to rot there. He and his family took so much more than money from her they took her life. That is until the day her friends came to save her taking her away from London to Liam who thinks she is there for a job of governess to his older children. He doesn’t have a clue about her past but he has a past of his own. Both of them are hiding things from the other as each day their demons haunt them as they calm the other giving meaning back to life. This was really an emotional rollercoaster that is filled with darkness from the first page but by the end you see lots of light as they come together giving each other what they need to make a HEA. My heart so broke for Philomena I really cheered her on wanting her to be happy and find a true man. She has ever reason to let life take her down yet she is strong not willing to give in as her past keeps torturing her she pulls from an inter strength and holds her chin up standing up taking the world on. Liam is a charmer that I doubt many women could walk away from. There is no doubt he is surrounded by darkness but that just makes him more of a man we would love to get our hands on. The supporting characters are wonderful. I doubt you could not fall in love with Liam’s children they are just so dear I wanted to make them my own. This is the second book I have read of this authors she is fast becoming one of my favorite. She knows how to write a story that keeps the readers not only invested but highly entertained as she weaves a plot that you have no trouble picturing in your mind. At times she shocks you with her tales and at others she just breaks your heart but always leaves you smiling at the end. I really doubt you could not read this and not feel some powerful emotions. I can’t wait for her next book in this series.

    Dark And Moving Story

Reading a Kerrigan Bryne book borders on experiencing a divine breakthrough in understanding the nature of mankind at its most downtrodden and at its very best. Between her portrayals transformations brought on by the goodness and kindness of others and ultimately love The Highlander, book three in the Victorian Rebels series, was a moving story. There is no doubt of this author's writing talent and the wide spectrum of feelings that readers will experience from her words will leave them thoughtful in their aftermath. The Highlander takes two crippled souls and reawakens their humanity. Between the abuses suffered and dealt there was a lifetime of agony that the hero and heroine took on, yet instead of breaking them they shared empathy and tapped into their inner good to become better people. Ms. Bryne tempers her abundance of raw brutality with well placed moments of tenderness beautifully. The draw between Liam and Mena was the kind that shook the pages with its intensity and kept you turning them in anticipation. The Highlander with its dark appeal is a striking example of harsh reality being transfigured by love. *I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.* *While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone.*

    Historical Highland Romance

Dark, deep and deadly describe this book and its hero. “He was William Grant Ruaridh Mackenzie, lieutenant colonel of Her Majesty’s Royal Secret Highland Watch, Marquess Ravencroft, and ninth laird and thane of clan Mackenzie of Wester Ross. A high agent of the crown and a leader of men was he.” Liam, was back home as Laird of the Mackenzie clan after 20 years of military service and needed a governess for his teenage son and daughter. The heroine and love interest of Liam in this book was Lady Philomena St. Vincent, Viscountess Benchley who preferred to be known as Mena. She had survived over half a decade of abuse by her husband, been shunted off to a mental asylum by that husband and then was saved from a future worse than death by the husbands of her friends. Those friends and their husbands decided that the best place for her to go to remain safe would be to the highlands as a governess. Both Liam and Mena were survivors who brought the best out in one another over time. Liam had been through the wars – literally. He had experienced a horrific childhood that scarred him mentally and physically then chose the military as his future where more mental and physical scarring took place. He was a hero of the realm and feared by enemies. He was a force to reckon with and not many if any raised their voice or hand to him – or if they did – lived to tell about it. And yet he was a loving father, cared about his lands and people and was gentle, tender and loving, too. Mena was a calming force that provided words of wisdom while also being a force to reckon with. Something caused her to snap and become the strong woman she was capable of being while still having fears that would rear their ugly heads from time to time. She was a wonderful and insightful governess, a warm and caring person, lighter in spirit every day and had the ability to justify the means to an end. I enjoyed both this and book two of the series. If/when I find a copy of the first book I will buy and read it because I find Blackheart of Ben More to sound intriguing. I look forward to book four and hope it will tell the story of Gavin, Earl of Thorne. I wonder who else might show up beyond Gavin. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Has a fiery passion during the heat of battle, a ferocious temper, bigger than life persona and dark secrets with a dark past, rite with rife, abuse, and protective of those he loves. Miss Philomena, aka Mena, is not just a mysterious, meek, Spinster governess to Liam's two teenage children. She has dark secrets of her own running from a dark, dangerous past. She has been abused, betrayed and placed into deplorable conditions, by the person who claimed to love her. Both have trust issues, been shamelessly hurt beyond anything a person should have to endure. Can Mena's lightness conquer Liam's darkness? Will they learn to trust each other, before its too late for them both? Danger lurks, passion flares and love blossoms. But betrayal is on the horizon, for both Liam and Mena, that could cost them their lives and much more. An emotionally charged story, with many twists and turns, dark, dangerous, suspenseful, and with mysterious characters, will have readers entranced and enthralled. From the first page to the last, readers will be captivated, and drawn to Mena and Liam. A must read Victorian Romance! A fiery tale that will have readers holding their breath in hopes of Mena and Liam finding and holding onto their HEA. Brilliantly, passionately and masterfully written. A simple WOW, isn't enough to describe this lush, suspenseful and mysterious romance. Ms. Byrne writes tastefully and with a honesty that will bring chivers to the reader, as she takes them to an entirely different world, were sadness, and darkness lurks. Very intensive, intriguing and utterly fascinating. A captivating Victorian Romance! *Please be aware, some readers may find some of the content offensive, and some of the language vilgar.* Received for an honest review from Net Galley.
