    A Higher Loyalty

This book took me on a journey into the world of a man who holds true to his values and ethics over an amazing series of historical events. Ultimately this book is about what makes a good leader and is inspiration and motivational. Don't believe what the press says but read this story from a smart, tough, ethical person. I was inspired and believe you will be too

Not the Higher Loyalty I was expecting

Unlike most readers probably, I did not read this book solely to find dirt on Donald Trump. I have read numerous biographies of attorneys, and I was eager to see what this attorney (James Comey) would say about his career as a high-profile prosecutor and FBI director. The title, A Higher Loyalty, implies that Comey had to violate one principle in favor of a higher principle (e.g., like a whistleblower, maybe he broke the law when leaking information to achieve a higher good for society). Because he is a lawyer, I assumed the “higher” loyalty would be to the code of legal ethics that governs attorneys’ actions (even when serving in a non-attorney role). Surprisingly, though, this book contains zero discussion of legal ethics. Nor does Comey discuss a loyalty to another objective set of principles (e.g., a religious belief). Instead, it seems that Comey’s higher loyalty is to his own sense of right and wrong. Unfortunately, virtually everyone (even the mobsters Comey discusses early in the book) claim to be following their own sense of right and wrong. With a whole life to draw from, it is easy for an autobiographer to spin his/her story. In this case, Comey has been repeatedly accused of criminal behavior by the sitting president, as well as various other political enemies on both sides of the aisle. Comey’s agenda seems to be to portray himself in a positive light, garnering public support to shield himself from prosecution. Judging from the book’s contents, he believes political liberals comprise the group most likely to come to his defense; accordingly, he (1) lavishes praise on Barack Obama while throwing George W. Bush and Donald Trump under the bus (albeit with little new information), (2) expresses admiration for Martin Luther King, Jr., (3) discusses his fight for racial diversity in the FBI, and (4) notes his family members’ participation in the Women’s March opposing President Trump. Early in the book, Comey attempts to portray himself as a victim of bullying, but it is difficult to picture the 6’8” prosecutor as a victim. He also provides a lengthy defense of his clumsy handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Despite all the self-serving content, the book has a few interesting bits (thus meriting my 3-star rating): 1. Early in the book, there is an account of a childhood home invasion that seems possibly character-forming for Comey. 2. There is a humorous account of the time Comey’s wife accidentally hit the FBI director’s help button, summoning a legion of armed agents early in the morning. 3. There are some hints about Comey’s close relationship with Bob Mueller, which could become important as the Mueller investigation continues. Overall, Comey comes across as a tradition-bound, hierarchical government bureaucrat. I have to assume that this book is the best case for Comey’s success as an FBI director, but I doubt it will persuade many readers to come to his defense. Comey’s stance on civil rights issues will seem puzzling to most lawyers reading the book (most notably a passage in which he seems baffled as to why tech companies resist handing over user data to law enforcement). Despite the book’s subtitle, there is very little direct discussion of leadership principles (although Comey does discuss Ray Dalio’s leadership style at one point, presumably based on a reading of Principles).

    A Higher Loyalty

My admiration for this man of immense courage & integrity grew as I learned his & his FBI’s rationale for the decisions made. Thank you, James Comey, for your honesty and service to the American people & as a Canadian, for your efforts to keep Trump in line. Your optimism is infectious- I am less worried about Trump’s volatility and irrational behaviour than I was. “This ‘he’ too will pass.”

    Comey...A Lower Integrity

It is just Comey trying to write his own legacy. It is entirely political, and if it had not been given to me, I would not have read it. Make up your own mind, but I wouldn't buy it, pun intended...
