  • A very disappointing book . . .

Having read the entire Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny, I was anxious to read the latest installment, "All the Devils Are Here". At the beginning of this book, Reine-Marie and Armand Gamache are in Paris, where both their children and their families have settled. Daughter Annie is about to give birth, and Reine-Marie and Armand are there to welcome their new grandchild. After Armand's godfather, Stephen Horowitz, is critically injured in what appears to be a hit and run accident, Armand, as well as son-in-law Jean-Guy and son Daniel, become involved in investigating the accident. What they find is very troubling; it seems Stephen somehow became involved in corporate espionage. Initially this story read well, and I had high hopes for a great read. Fairly early in the book, however, I became concerned about a few details. An example: Why, I wondered, did the author choose the name Stephen Horowitz for Armand's godfather but when asked if Stephen was Jewish, Armand replied, "Not that I know of . . ." Horowitz is a recognizably Jewish name, and if the author did not want the character to be Jewish why use that surname? The author also alluded to Stephen's involvement in the Resistance during WWII but never really included this in the story line. As I read more of the story I found that the plot dragged. A disappointing read.

  • Thrilling

Well paced, frustratingly delightful to not be sure who the devils were until near the end. Hard to put down.
