This will haunt you long after reading

Wow, just wow. I'm not even sure how to review this book as it's not like anything I've read before. It gets five stars because I can't stop thinking about it. When I read the marketing blurb for the book I thought it sounded different and intriguing. Once I began reading this book, I thought it was a bit confusing....who writes a novel backwards? Oddly enough, not only does it work, it excels. This story wouldn't have worked with a traditional novel structure and I applaud the author for taking a unique approach. The premise has been well summarized by the publisher, so to avoid spoilers, I'm just sticking to my reaction to the book. If the blurb intrigues you, then take a chance and read this book....then stick with it for a few chapters. Once you've read a bit, you won't be able to put it down. I suspect that, like me, once you've finished this novel that it will continue to haunt you. While this is the first book I've read by this author, I have added her to my must read authors' list.

    Great read, totally unpredictable

The foreword describes the book as being told in reverse, which is a very unique approach. This is the story of two young women who disappear a decade apart, from the same small town in North Carolina and the players are the same in each instance. The book was well-written, and Nic's internal dialogue was well-crafted. The characters are well-developed, but as you keep reading you learn more about them and your opinion keeps changing. The book is suspenseful, as each piece of information is revealed, but not quite fully, as we are working backwards in time. You receive the end result, but the how is missing and you are left wondering (in a good way!). There are plot twists, and times you are entirely wrong in your expectations, which just this just keeps the suspense going. This was a great read, totally unpredictable and will keep your attention all the way to the end.

    Great read

I was one of the lucky one who got an advance reading copy. From page 1, I was taken by the story and I found it quite refreshing that the investigation is going backwards; it kept me on the edge of my seat because I was trying to solve the case with the "missing" clues that came later on to explain the where and when something was found.

    I really enjoyed it

At first I was a little put off by the story being told in reverse. It does make sense though because that is kind of how you put together a mystery in your own mind, newest to oldest. There were a lot more twists in this story than I expected. I thought I had it all figured out but it turns out I did not and it did lead to a surprising (but well built up) conclusion. In addition, really great cover art. Really makes you want to pick it up off a shelf.
