  • A compelling Story

A great deal of hype and controversy surrounds the publication Jeanine Cummins' "American Dirt", and I was keen to read the book to make my own assessment. Lydia and her 8 year old son Luca are the only survivors of a Mexican cartel’s hit on their immediate and extended family. Desperate to escape Acapulco and the cartel, mother and son go on a harrowing journey towards the Mexican-American border in the hope they will find safety and a new life in the United States. Along the way they meet teenaged sisters Soledad and Rebeca. They pay a smuggler to take them across the border and experience various hardships along the way. Eventually the four migrants settle in Maryland, where relatives of Soledad and Rebeca live. While I did not find this book completely satisfying, “American Dirt” is a compelling read depicting the current migrant experience.

  • A real page-turner!

This book is going to go into my memory bank as one of the best books I have ever read. Now that I have finished it, I still cannot quit thinking about it. Lydia lives in Acapulco with her husband Sebastian and their 8-year-old son, Luca. Sebastian is a journalist who write an article on the local cartel and their crimes. The cartel shows up at one of their family gatherings and kills Sebastian along with all of Lydia's family except for her and Luca, who were in the bathroom at the time of the attack. Lydia knows that the only way she will ever save her son is flee north across Mexico into the United States knowing that the cartel is right behind her. The author did a fantastic job researching this very well written book. This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page.

  • Its over rated

This book has been called "The Grapes of Wrath of its time" LOL! I can assure you that this book is not even in the same ballpark as the classic. This book is not good. I found the writing to be mediocre at best. The characters are flat and the flow is predictable; main character gets into a REALLY BAD situation. Main character CONVIENENTLY finds a solution. Rinse and repeat. there is also far too much use of the colour brown as a adjective, "brown skin" "brown tummy" we get it...the book is set in Mexico everyone is brown. Ugh gross. Its unfortunte the athor dropped the ball with this one because the issue it tries to address is a very real one and onethat is vwery important and it NEEDS TO BE TOLD, however Ms. Cummins just isn't a strong enough writeer to tell it well.

  • Heart wrenching

An outstanding story of love, desperation and determination. If the current american president ( and i use that term loosely) could read he might have some understanding of how unfairly most migrants are treated and know they are looking for a better life for a reason.
