  • I read this book in three days. Adichie's characters are so developed and compelling, and her story so complex.. it is rare to find story-telling like hers. I love perspective of the Nigerian living in America, and the main character Ifemelu's racial blog chronicalling her experiences as an "NAB" (non-american black) was hilarious. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about life in modern Nigeria, what it means to be a black immigrant in America, or anyone who just loves a great, complicated love story. I can't wait for her next novel.

  • This book is more than just a ripping yarn - it changes the way you see the world. It's a love story, but it's also about modern attitudes to race and what it's like to be a stranger in a strange land. When the young Nigerian couple split up, one heads for America, the other to England. In both places they find that their romanticized notions of the West are far from the truth. The book is a joy to read, and it made me want to go back and read Chimamanda's other work.

    Two thumbs up! Five stars! Ms. Adichie weaves a love story with profound sociopolitical insights. Ifemelu, the main character, is unforgettable.

  • A refreshing perspective

    I feel like this book answers a lot of questions I didn't even bother to ask. Through fiction I learned about race, American black and non American black and what that means in terms of identity (which really opens up ideas about post colonialism), and hair. I don't know why, but the section on hair was the most powerful and the one with the strongest imagery. Hair can define to much, but it's purposfully hidden, controlled. Anyway, I'm going on a rant now lol. Pick this book up, enjoy the read and well written prose, and learn a little more about the people on this planet.

  • Took some time to get into it

    Thoroughly enjoyed, once I got well into it. Took a while. Should be edited down. A great take on the black experience. The blogs are the best written part of this book.
