    Jacks and Jokers

Found this a bit disappointing overall, much of the "evidence" used is little more than hearsay and probably would not be permitted to be used in any court. As a police officer from that era one thing I did while reading the book was consider the hypothetical question, 'If I was on a jury would I vote to convict based solely on information in the book?'. The answer is no it is insufficient and in many instances without any corroboration. It relies on the reader previously accepting without question that Messrs Lewis and Murphy (and O'Halahan) are/were corrupt and therefore accepting all statements against them as truthful. That Herbert was corrupt is certain, he admired the same, but were all others tainted also corrupt - no doubt the self-confessed ones such as Parker and Burgess were and no doubt others also were but this book fails to prove any of that to any high standard. Of course it may be that the third book (when published) will provide that missing proof so to quote an old saying....the jury is still out. I actually enjoyed the first book (Three Crooked Kings) much more and looking forward to the final of the trilogy. However despite my own misgivings if you have an interest in Queensland and its recent history then this should not be missed, after reading 'Three Crooked King's of course. I must add that one on does write in an easy to read style
