I honestly don’t know what to make of this book. The title doesn’t make any sense to me; I’m not sure whose age it’s referring to: the thirty-something mom who is struggling to create some picture perfect life, the young babysitter who is trying to figure out where her life is going, or the toddler at the centre of it all? I didn’t much like any of the characters except for the child and the babysitter. I thought the boyfriend was a jerk and though the theme of racism is a prominent theme throughout the book, there were times when I thought it was pushed too much and other times when it was barely addressed at all (I thought the police coming to their house could have been used a bit more against the Chamberlains). Overall, I wanted to like this book given how much I had heard about it and also because it became a Reese’s book club pick, but I was disappointed. 3/5 stars.

  • Engaging, thought-provoking read

I have so many thoughts about Such a Fun Age that it's hard to know where to begin. First off, I loved the book. It's an amazing debut novel and very relevant to current situations regarding race. The story begins with Emira doing a favor for her employers. She takes the little girl, Briar, that she baby sits for to a 24 hour supermarket to get her out of the house. She is confronted by a white security guard who accuses Emira of kidnapping Briar. I loved Emira; she is a 25 year old college graduate who is having a hard time really deciding what she wants to do when she grows up. I also loved Briar. She is so precocious and said a lot of funny and brilliant things. Emira accepted her for who she was, something Briar's mother, Alix, couldn't seem to do. For the most part, I really did like Emira's friends. They did have her back, but they could have been a little more accepting of her choices while she was trying to find herself. I did not like Alix at all. She was very stalkerish and whenever anything happened, she seemed to only think about how it affected her. This was an amazing read and I highly recommend. I can't wait to read this author's next book! Thank you to Netgalley and Putnam for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

  • Great debut!

What a great debut! This is a great contemporary fiction. The writing (not flawless) is very simple but extremely engaging. Even though some dialogues were bad, I didn’t want to stop reading. There are lots of topics for discussion: social class, racism, parenting, family, friendship & relationship. I confess that after reading the first chapter, which made my blood boiled with raw emotion, I expected a lot more, but the author took a different direction and therefore did not touch me in the same way. The relationship between Emira and the little girl, Briar, was absolutely beautiful. The ending wasn’t to my satisfaction but it was totally acceptable, as it felt more realistic. I will not be surprised if this book is adapted for the screen. I’m looking forward to reading this author’s future work.

  • Great audiobook

Best book I’ve listened to. So entertaining. The story itself is captivating and lent itself perfectly to being an audiobook.
