    Read Misborn first

As usual, Brandon Sanderson delivers in spades. The pacing, the polish, the humor, it's all there. Fair warning, though, if you haven't read the Mistborn series, it won't be easy to put things together. I liked the progression of setting from from the middle ages to the industrial revolution. I'm reserving full judgement until I read all 3 books, but I think this is a great start, and I expect the 3rd setting (the future) is going to blow my mind

    A worthy sequel

A worthy sequel to the Mistborn trilogy. Strong characters, wonderful setting, and a masterful use of description. While others may rave about this being a Mistborn Steampunk novel, I didn't see it that way. I saw this book as a natural extension of a world that progresses with technology. Although there are great similarities between our American Wild West and the Australian Outback frontiers, and although I do question whether another world would have mimicked our clothing fashions quite as much as this one did did, I have to wonder if I substituted borrowed imagery as I read, or if I was unduly influenced by the cover art and interior illustrations. All that being said, here is why I rate this book as inspiring to me: The metal magic system is well thought out and integral to the plot, but never dry and boring. This unusual world required copious descriptions to explain what was happening. This could have been the story's weakness. Too often authors bore the reader with pages of tedious exposition, or gloss over the magic and just have people and objects flying around willy-nilly. Not so with The Alloy of Law. It occurred to me that a movie adaptation of this story would have to pay attention to the physics of allomancy in order to represent properly the world Brandon Sanderson created. There is just enough description to help the reader understand how and why the characters performed each action without tossing an anchor into every action scene. This magic system works. It is detailed and complicated, but presented in an effortless way. Being a writer by trade, I know that what Sanderson pulls off in these books requires great skill. That's why this book is the first inspirational read of the year for me. I'd love to write so "effortlessly".

Not as good as I'd hoped

Unlike the previous Mistborn books, there is almost no character development here. The plot twists aren't great. And the finale (epilogue?), where we learn who the Big Bad is, is just plain dumb: how could anyone be silly enough to go and confront Big Bad alone, with no plan whatsoever? Look, it's a competent enough story. But if you've read the Mistborn trilogy or Elantris and were hoping for similar amazing fare, you're going to be disappointed.

A good extension on a good trilogy.

    Alloy of law

Sort of a sequel to the mistborn trilogy. Great read, fast paced. Could not put it down. Highly recommended
