    Great Introduction to Engine World

This book follows Eila as she slowly goes crazy, in a society where everybody takes a drug and it's almost inconceivable for somebody not to. Eila has to attempt to wean herself off of the drug, while hiding that she's not taking it from not only her parents but everybody else, or else she'll be sent to the insane asylum, Joffrey Columns. A fun and fast read, this book is opening a whole new world and I can't wait to read more stories set in it.

    Great concept

This story had a great concept, but I don't think it was executed as well as other books from these authors. Too much time was spent in the main character's head, with very little interaction between characters. They came up with a great cast in Pavilion, but they didn't explore them as much as they could have. Also, the ending didn't feel like an ending - they left it wide open. That being said, I did enjoy the book. The world was cool and the characters (what they showed of them) had potential.

Finally a YA story without the romance

*Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this book to review. This story was simply amazing. This has been my favorite Realm & Sands title I've read so far. It is a mind-bender that will get you questioning your own reality. I love the story, but there are people who won't. If you are one of these types, this isn't your book. If you aren't, then give it a read: YA as romance: If you believe that YA needs to have a romance element, skip. I read a fair amount of YA and it was refreshing to have a story without a love interest. Was I rooting for Eila and Levi to get together? Yeah, I was. But while Eila considers him kind of attractive, neither one seems to make any move or show any romantic interest in the other. People complain all the time that there aren't more strong female characters in fiction who aren't defined by their love interest in another character. Well, here is one. Steampunk fans: The authors describe this story as a steampunk, but the steampunk elements felt almost gratuitous. You could remove all of the steampunk references and the story would still hold strong. One of the reasons I waited as long as I did to read this books was because I'm not a big steampunk fan. It worked for me, but if you are looking for a story with strong steampunk elements, this might not be the book for you. Writers: I'm working on my first novel right now, and a lot of writers out there get really feisty about other writers breaking the "rules." Another reviewer (probably discovering this book through the authors's podcast as I did), complained that there was too much telling and that Truant and Platt would never get serious sales. Well, based on the sales rank, this book probably sells about a dozen copies per day and their most recent is selling over 100. Lesson: writers care about writing rules. Readers care about engaging stories.

    Uniquely Enrapturing

Every time you pick up a book you hope that it will take you on a journey that is exciting, terrifying, heartfelt, joyful, and in the end leave you with something you didn't have before. The Dream Engine is to me a book like that. It is a journey that moves so inexorably forward that once it began I felt I could not stop, I had to instead hold clinging to the freight train of the story as it ran wildly away with me. If you are looking for a read that is hard to put down with characters that shimmer brightly in your mind as you go on their journey with them then this is most definitely the book for you and it is WELL worth the asking price, for anyone of ANY age who loves to dream of a different world.

Great YA Fiction That Will Transport You

I love The Dream Engine because it has great characters and an intricate and well-executed plot with as many moving parts as the Blunderbuss--the titular dream engine. When I read this story, I felt truly transported; it was a little jarring to come back to the real world. And how perfect for this story in which Eila has a hard time discerning what's real and what's not. I appreciate a YA that isn't dumbed down. This story includes complicated problems that are great metaphors for our own challenges in life. If you are looking for a smart, entertaining, and thoughtful read, you can't go wrong with The Dream Engine.
