  • accurate and uplifting

I was initially hesitant to read a novel from this time, because i grew up during this period. However, reading help resolve memories that i had forgotten or did not want to remember. The evolution leading to the final chapters are so uplifting, positive, and good outlook for the future of humanity.

  • Great Read

I enjoyed this book immensely .It really showed how racism is spread throughout the races not just black to white . Sam to Desiree, Stella to her heritage ...Mallard the town . How deep secrets affect families for generations . So many different subplots as well . I do however wish there had been more closure to the characters but on the other hand left us thinking after the book was read .

  • Great read!

This was a terrific surprise. And to think that I was ready to quit after 21%, which represents the first part of the book. I just couldn’t connect. I did start it 3 times. But from the very beginning of the second part and there on the storyline had a great flow. It was so engrossing and strong that I did not want to stop reading. The writing is excellent and the storyline is very well structured. I’m a sucker for stories that involve families and friends. How much are we willing to give up or sacrifice just to have a better life? Would you deny your roots? I can’t imagine living a life with that constant conflict with yourself, but knowing or understanding the circumstances seems completely acceptable. I dream of a world without racism and intolerance. I’m looking forward to watching the HBO adaptation (in development).

  • A Family Saga About Racism, Love, and Truth

A well-written, complex plot about racism and love that left me with much to ponder. Twin girls Desiree and Stella are born into poverty in a small town in Louisiana, known as a haven specifically for light-skinned Afro-Americans. From their earliest memories, the girls are seen by everyone as "The Twins", without individual identities. Even though their temperaments are quite distinct. And the two are exceptionally close. It's not surprising then, when as teenagers, they carefully execute a plan to leave their hometown, together, to explore the wider world. From reading the publisher's description, you will know that ultimately one twin decides to pass as white, while the other continues living as a black American. The decision forces the lives of the twins in different directions as each navigates jobs, love, marriage, and motherhood. This is a non-linear narrative over 25 years, with episodes that catch each twin at different important moments in their individual lives. But it's not just a story about race in America -- with predictable limitations and segregation. It's also how racism can impact love, relationships, and trust. And raises some complex questions, that are left unanswered. The very reason I am still pondering. A very worthwhile and fast-paced read. I now plan to read other books by Brit Bennett.

  • 12/10 would recommend

I have almost no words to relay what wonderful story this is, so very well written with a masterful command of the English language. Story telling at its finest. I could not wait to see how the tale ended but, at the same time, I did not want to get there. I can feel a book hangover coming on.....
