    A compelling family story

Jennifer Weiner's "Mrs. Everything" is the story of sisters Jo and Bethie Kaufman, from their childhood in the 1950's to Jo's death from cancer in 2016. Very different as girls, their paths as women diverged in unexpected ways. Through life they experience many challenges before finding themselves as older adults. Jo and Bethie lived through interesting times as the place of women in society changed considerably. Their story mirrors the lives of many women of these times and is an excellent read.

    Beautiful story about sisters

This is a great book. I'm a fan of Jennifer Weiner to begin with, but this book is so different from anything else she's written. The characters of Jo and Bethie are so rich, I really cared for them. I fluctuated between who's story I was more invested in. It kept me engaged from start to finish; there was no lag. If I was forced to find a fault, I would say it's that we spend a lot of time with Jo and Bethie in their younger years, I would like to have had more in their twilight years. As well, as they grew older it seemed as Bethie became a secondary character, almost, a reflection of what was happening in Jo's life.

    An intense, moving story

A look at the lives of Jo & Bethie, women born in the 1940's whose lifestyle choices did not fit the expectations of the society they grew up in. Four generations of Kaufmans begins with Ken & Sarah in 1951. The struggles they conquered through each decade made this a compelling read. when the final chapter is dated 2022 it is at the site of the first house the Kaufman family ever owned, as viewed by their great grandchild. There were a few slow spots but overall a very moving, emotionally intense story. I volunteered to read an ARC from Atria (Simon & Schuster) through Net Galley.

A thought provoking and entertaining read.

A wonderful read about how things have changed and nothing has changed. Even in 2019 we strive to be everything to everyone and sometimes forget to be ourselves. A story about a family's life over 4 generations and the mistakes made and overcome.

    Dysfunctional relationships make great reading

It's taken me a while to write this review because the book made a huge impression on me. I'd read a couple of Weiner's books, previously. She's very good at writing about dysfunctional relationships in a caring but amusing manner. This book...This book was written with more caring and less amusement. This family, these characters, went beyond dysfunction all the way to toxic. And yet, one could relate to even some of the more toxic characters, especially given time and place. One wanted to rail at them for the choices they were making, while understanding why they were making these choices. It's hard being different, an outsider. And it's probably even harder accepting that a loved one is a misfit. One can almost forgive the mother for her inability to accept her daughter's unique qualities, given what she'd experienced, herself. In case I haven't made it clear, I loved this book and highly recommend it, but be aware that it's intense. Beware of triggers.
