Overall Meh

This book was very scenic. Who doesn't love scenic? The writing wasn't anything amazing. In fact, it wasn't even anything good. It was, however, straight to the point. No detours for such elusive things as backstory or character development. Any character that was not Mark or Kate-not-Katie wasn't an exit either author wanted to stop at, or even point out as we passed. Ryan was very minorly fleshed out and Violet had a couple crazy stories thrown in to make the grand and poetic points this novel was clearly reaching for, but that's as far as it went. And the poetry. My God, the poetry. And no, I don't mean the metaphors or any of that shit. I mean the actual, literal poems that find themselves scattered through the story's final moments. The authors patted themselves on the backs for their poetic prowess to the grand applause of an entire fictional audience made up of many a fictional artist in the form of a poetry reading wherein a few of the characters get up to read their works. The poetry is so bad, guys. So bad. I can't even begin to describe how bad it is. And having the characters shed actual tears at how 'good' it is only makes it worse. This was, by far, the most uncomfortable part of this collaboration. Why then, you might ask, are there any stars but one? It's a quick read. Understanding of the queer community and its obstacles is very obvious at least on Levithan's part. If you're queer and you're reading it, it will get you pumped up for Pride. If you're not, it will also get you pumped up for Pride. Mark's story was not at all what you'd expect, which I loved. It was a refreshing change of pace and it's always nice to be surprised with a little realism in a Y/A novel. I didn't love it. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. However, I didn't hate it either. It's nothing spectacular and nothing horrendous and, honestly, it's the kind of book you read in a day and forget the next.
