another wonderful entry in the Insp Gamache series

I’ve read every book in Louise Penny’s Armand Gamache/Three Pines series, and have enjoyed each and every one. So I was happy to receive an ARC of this title from the publisher/Edelweiss, in exchange for my honest review, and thus be able to get a “dose” of Three Pines a little early this year. And I really enjoyed this title, just like all of the previous ones, reading and finishing it during a couple of plane flights across the US and then back home. As usual, Penny’s writing is crisp and clear, she has a sure sense of human nature which helps her create believable characters, the plot threads are solid and weave together nicely, and Three Pines remains a place I very much wish I could visit! As I think back over the series, each book seems to have had a slightly different emphasis, often something that is timely. In this book, without giving away too much, one of the main plotlines revolves around possible sexual/spousal abuse, even though the characters most directly involved have probably never heard of the “Me Too” movement. Other threads are also timely, including manifestations of the corruption that can come with political power, which have been developing over the last several books; some issues with cyber-bullying; and some severe weather that adds urgency to everything else that is going on. I’m not sure whether Penny means to directly reference climate change with this last one, but it certainly fits. And, the familiar characters in Three Pines are still there, although Gamache’s daughter and son-in-law are getting ready to move out of the country, so there is plenty going on. And throughout it all, Gamache remains his own steady, inimitable and awesome self. One word of advice I would offer is that if this is going to be your first Gamache/Three Pines title, you might consider reading the series in order instead. I think there is enough background provided so you could enjoy the book as a stand-alone, but I think there are enough continuing story arcs and character development that you’ll enjoy it much more if you’ve read several, if not all, of the titles that come before. Finally, please note that I give very very few five star rankings, maybe only one in ten or one in twenty, for really exceptional books. So my four-star ranking for this still means I enjoyed the book a lot – I just like to leave a little room at the top in my ranking system!

    My Thoughts

Sometimes an author attains a level which requires the term great, however, Louise Penny has surpassed herself, and gone beyond. She moves a small village and the people we love (yes, they are people, not merely characters) into their future with grace and promise. You will be amazed. 🌹

    A wonderful read...as always..

Another wonderful entry in this marvelous series by Louise Penny. The progression and depth of the key characters in the series is terrific. Their individual stories are broadened and it’s hard not to feel as though you only know these characters, but care deeply about them and want to know more about them. The themes within the key storyline are current and relevant and the author tackles them with thought and understanding, and isn’t afraid to tell some uncomfortable truths and challenge our preconceptions of certain social and moral issues. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I find myself equally as enthralled now as I did when I turned the first page in the first book in the Gamache novels. I also found the acknowledgments by author to be quite touching and honest!

    Loved It

I Loved this book as I do all of her books. She will be in Edmonton AB on Sept. 27th and I will miss her because we are away. I am so sad. Louise Penny makes you feel and imagine every word she writes. I felt real terror when I thought Jean Guy was going to be killed by the young drug dealer. The bridge scene filled me with great anxiety. A great writer and hardly wait for the next book! ❤
