    Not your typical vampire book.

This book pulled me in at page one and didn't let go, even after I finished it. I still can't wrap my head around the twists and turns that happened during my journey with Charlie and Sebastian. Charlie's aunt is kidnapped by two men who show up in the middle of the night. A third guy, Sebastian, is tasked with getting rid of Charlie. When Sebastian touches her, he knows she's different and need protecting. Sebastian has no memory before he became a vampire, until he meets Charlie. With just one touch, he gets a flash from his life before. He needs to keep Charlie safe so he can get answers to his own questions. At first, I thought this would be a run of the mill vampire book. I was wrong. Every time I thought I figured something out, I was thrown for a loop. I didn't want to put this book down and found myself still reading at 3am to see what would happen next. This is the perfect book to recommend to anyone. It's got vampires, mystery, and a little romance all in one book. I will be telling everyone to go pick up this book. I will also be the first in line to get the second book in the series. An advanced readers copy was provided for an honest review.

    Great new Paranormal Romance!

To start, I must admit I got hooked in by yet another beautiful cover! I wish I wasn’t such a sucker for pretty artwork, but sometimes it works to my advantage like with this book. The idea that I could have possibly never read this gem or found this author...what a shame that would have been! At the start of Risen, Charlie Keegan is living with her Aunt Rachel and her German shepherd Jax in the secluded woods in the middle of nowhere. All Charlie wants to do is break free, to be rid of the cabin - she feels nothing short of trapped. Just when she thought that there was no escaping...there is an ominous knock at their front door. Jax is on guard, snarling and growling. The door suddenly is busted off the hinges and shattered into pieces. Into the cabin walks three of the most beautiful men Charlie has ever seen. They are so beautiful that they look unnatural, then she notices their fangs. From this moment on, Charlie’s life spirals out of control. Charlie discovers that her aunt is being kidnapped to be used as a pawn in an ongoing war between monsters, a world that she had no idea existed. As she learns this new realm, Charlie meets new allies and enemies alike. She experiences new feelings, emotions, and challenges that force her to grow and test her personal strength as never before. As this fast-paced and thrilling adventure unfolds, Charlie learns she is more than a simple human. But, what exactly is she? That’s a subject for debate… There is so much interesting detail to this story! My personal favorite is the different types of vampires and how they are all related to the story. However, I refuse to ruin any of this story for any reader behind me! Just know that if you choose to read this, and you should, put on your seatbelt...you are in for a wild ride! I just hope Cole Gibsen is working hard on the next installment because I can’t wait to see what happens next and I have a thousand unanswered questions. I’m sure in her own devilish way she intended to leave the reader feeling this way! In conclusion, I’m sure Cole Gibsen doesn’t want to be compared to all the other young adult vampire series and most importantly Twilight, the horror! But I must admit that I loved this first installment of what I hope is a very long series! I’m super thrilled to say without hesitation…”Move over Twilight! Here storms in Risen!” A Literaryhuge thank you to NetGalley, Melissa Montovani with Teen Publishing, and of course Cole Gibsen herself for allowing me access to this book before publication in exchange for my unbiased opinion. It rocks!!!

    Great new vampire series!

Charlie was hiking in the woods with her dog Jax, when suddenly Jax starts acting suspiciously; he seems on high alert, but Charlie hears nothing, literally. She’s been seriously bored recently, living with her Aunt Rachel Keegan in their small cabin near the woods. But all that was about to change. Shortly after Charlie returns to the cabin, Rachel starts talking of monsters, then two strange men arrive and take Rachel away. A third stranger, Sebastian, is introduced and told to dispose of Charlie and to look for proofs that Rachel’s son is dead. And the monsters? They’re vampires! When a couple of seemingly innocent, though inexplicable events occur, Sebastian realises that Charlie might be useful to him with a quest of his own. He will ensure her safety, he will let her live, if she agrees to help him. She doesn’t quite have a choice, does she? Cole Gibsen had me enthralled from the very beginning of RISEN with the exceptional atmosphere she created: so eerie and dark, with this talk of monsters, vampire wars. I was all in! I totally identified with Charlie and her sarcasm, even under pressure; she sounded, acted, and talked like any normal almost-eighteen year-old. The dialogues are brilliant, tailor-made to suit every character. RISEN is super fast-paced, the action starts almost right away, and hints at mountains of secrets to look forward to were dropped like breadcrumbs along the way: what is the farm? Who are the Anima and Mentis clans? What does it have to do with Charlie? I just couldn’t wait to see what would happen next! Plot twists abound in this action-packed novel, and I really liked the author’s worldbuilding; familiar, yet not entirely. RISEN has some fabulous secondary characters: Opal, a vampire hunter, the redoubtable Delaney, and the irresistible villainess Queen Seraphina, who nearly stole the show; I couldn’t help picture Charlize Theron playing her. The only little glitch, in my opinion, was the romance. Thankfully, it doesn’t get in the way of the plot, it is not the prominent feature of the novel, but it didn’t work for me. I loved both Charlie and Sebastian, I thought they made a solid team, great friends but I never felt the chemistry between them. I think the seeds might have been sowed too early, because at the very beginning, Charlie found herself attracted to him because he is model-gorgeous while at the same time she’s terrified; I know bad boys are a popular sort, and a vampire is an ultimate bad boy, but still. It felt a tad too convenient, and the attraction could have developed later one, when some trust had been really established. Or it could have been the fact that Charlie is not quite eighteen and Sebastian described as possibly “early twenties”. He did sound noticeably older than her; there was a bit of an ick factor there, at least as far as I’m concerned. I feel that a YA novel really succeeds if it can appeal to readers of all ages, which RISEN accomplishes, and I also think fans of Twilight, among others, will enjoy RISEN. The war has just begun! I give 4 ½ stars

    A Masterpiece

#Risen #NetGalley *I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange of an honest review* I’m just bubbling over with things to say about this book. It’s going to be hard because I don’t want to spoil anything, but at the same time, I’m dying to tell all about it! I will have to say that if you liked Twilight, you will LOVE this. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the same old cliche. It has its own uniqueness. So Charlie lives with her aunt Rachel in a secluded cabin in the woods. More than anything, she longs to be far away from it and around other people. Oh, and there’s a German Shepherd she has named Jax. The story starts off with a bang. Nice looking guys in expensive suits show up and kidnap Rachel. One is left to “take care of” and dispose of Charlie. Little does she know, they are vampires from the clan called Mentis. She finds this out by running, which only triggers Sebastian’s bloodlust. Thankfully he doesn’t bite her because she has rubbed some natural cream on her that her aunt made. It repels vampires lol. It’s actually a funny moment. Sebastian is reluctant to do away with Charlie because he wasn’t really onboard with the idea in the first place. Queen Seraphina has taken him in when he was a child and claims to have saved him. She is a cruel queen and has been searching for Rachel a long time. When Sebastian touches Charlie, he has a flashback of memories from his past. Did I fail to mention that he has no memories of his past? They have been wiped. As the story progresses, we see more and more clues as to how Charlie isn’t as human as she thinks. Her blood seems to be toxic to vampires. There’s two other clans of vampires, Corpus, which are vile, foul smelling creatures that look like corpses. And Animas which can change shape into crows. The king of the Animas is Metteo who is thought to maybe be Charlie’s father. He is in love with Rachel. The Animas want to coexist with humans and are a peaceful clan. There’s so much I want to say. I’m not doing it justice but you just need to read it. I couldn’t put it down. There was never a dull moment. So many battles between the clans and also some glimpses into the Fae, which I think will play a bigger role in future books. I can’t wait for that. I think they play a big role in the vampire war. Along the way, we see a lot of surprises about Charlie. I should also mention there’s another major character named Opal who is a hunter. At first I didn’t like her. She was all about killing vampires. She is won over however and becomes Charlie’s best friend. My only negative comment is the book sort of ends in a cliff hanger. Not as bad as some books I’ve read. There’s a good stopping point, but not like I would’ve liked. I still give it 5 stars because it grabbed my attention better than a lot of books and held it throughout. I really think it would make a great movie and I fell in love with the cover.
