    The Collapsing Empire

I Loved this book. I hated that it is the first one and that I have to wait for this series to play out. To be honest, I think this is better than "Dune" (oh the horror and blasphemy). My reason is quite simple - the thought that a "drugged out" culture can run an empire, was ludicrous. But books aaee signs of their times and authors, whether willingly or unknowingly, sometimes write the gems that define them and their Era. Heinlein was the new world discovery and American can do attitude transferring the cowboy Era and the industrialization nascent mechanical and man's knowledge and ability to conquer hiss environment. Asimov was the intellectual builder of world's. The master of the psychological and the humanitarian of the machine (needed for its computing power to run our world's, but never quite making it to organic "perfection"). Norton and McCaffery for their belief in man's strength and the will and hope that our nascent belief and understanding of our lost/misplaced belief magic - to complete our world's. All great writers and many more I missed. But Mr. Scalzi has a different gift. The gift of making the impossible, probable. Of taking the high mechanics of this genre and making it relatable to reader. This book is going to be like a fine 5-course meal. I feel that these characters and this story can run effectively for a long time. The read was well paced, the character development to date is very strong and I hope they don't fall into the regular traps. N~

    Good, yet unsatisfying

I write this at 5am because I just stayed up all night reading the book. The charactera were great fun, the book is Scalzi at his Scalziest--fun, popping dialogue, fast moving story... to use the cliché I couldn't put it down. Yet I was hugely disappointed in the ending, where it felt the interesting crisis of the background was not resolved and many of the character arcs were either not resolved or blown off in a sentence or two in the epilog. The book doesn't give the sense it's first in a series, which still wouldn't forgive the criticism, just mitigate it somewhat. I am left with questions and wanting more. On one hand that's evidence of the success of the book, but on the other a failure. I would have gladly stayed up until sunrise to read the rest of the story if it had been here.

    Plots, intrigue and reversals

I was hooked right from the prologue, and I just could not put it down. The prologue sets the tone for the rest of the book: plots, intrigue, devious characters and reversals. You have to like (or tolerate?) Scalzi's style: specifically, the profanity. If such rubs you the wrong way, you will not enjoy it. I, for one, don't mind because Scalzi's characters are just like real life. I like novels with not too long and detailed descriptions, with some action, but also well defined characters and not too simplistic a plot. John Scalzi does not disappoint me, and I can't wait for the sequels.

    Another fun Scalzi book.

This is a very solid read. Clearly the first installment in a new series, The Collapsing Empire, still manages to deliver a satisfying story, and effectively builds a new universe to explore. It details a conflict between powerful families and worlds with serious consequences, yet zips by at an entertaining pace thanks to Scalzi’s penchant for great characters, dialogue and humor. Recommended!

    Fun Read

Instead of faster than light travel the universe uses something called The Flow. The flow is akin to currents on the ocean. This is how the far flung empire of humans is able to maintain its existence. One problem: the Flow is collapsing. The world that Scalzi has created is a balance of power between the Emperox, the Parliament, The Church, and the Merchant Guilds. With a brand new Emperox on the throne and the flow collapsing the political order is in trouble. This was my first John Scalzi book to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is paced well, the overall plot is entertaining, the characters are fun and intriguing. A lot of readers are criticizing this book because of the writer's politics. I probably disagree with Mr. Scalzi far more often than I agree. That doesn't matter in the least when it comes to an enjoyable book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
